Problem is, once you've driven something like an Omega, or are used to larger cars in general, small hatches always feel awful to drive and feel like they're about to fall apart every time you hit a pot hole.
I did manage to convince SWMBO to go for an MX-5 instead of another Fester last time, and it doesn't seem to have been a bad choice. A bit thirstier than most small cars (low to mid 30's to the gallon) but on the bright side it's much nicer to drive and has only needed a coil pack in 70,000 miles. Correct wheels driven too

The size of the boot also puts a handy limit on the amount of shopping possible
