E bay exhausts

now should i steer well clear of these?? are they tinny cheap cr$*??? the blurb says made by thyssen krupp???
someone please tell me not to be so stupid...go for an original.....
help.. :o

If you are keeping the car, its worth having the genuine GM.  I did my exhausts from the Cats back and discovered the original GM ones had a date stamp of 1999 on them - they had lasted 8 years!!!

Mind you, the job was enough of a hassle for me not to want to do it more often than that!

The GM ones are the best - quieter and long lasting.  Also, beware of sellers saying 'these are the same company that provide GM', as that may be true, but these will be the lower cost rubbish, not the same as supplied to GM

Just wondering.

How difficult/easy is this job on the drive with jack and axle stands?

I have recently spent quite a bit on exhaust bits over the past year (over £300) and don't think its finished there. :'(

I bought one & it's OK considering the price & that fact that my tame mechanic fitted it for £20 (a huge saving)
It is a bit noisier, but then again It is a Diesel so who really cares??

Which bits are you changing?  I used axle stands etc and did this on the drive.  I had a lot of bother with siezed cat to mid section studs.  In the end they got cut off and drilled out, replaced with bolts.  Fraid to say that took me quite a while...

my '99 elite has done 130,000 miles and still looks to have the original system on it, it is getting a little louder so it looks like it will be due for replacment soon.
If, after spending £250-300 it lasted another 130,000 then i would see that as excellent value

i got a quote from my local vaux dealer and they wanted £150 for one centre box  :-[

so i bought 2 centre boxes and a 3.0 tailbox from ebay £109 shipped from germany, i done a slight mod to tailbox by cutting it open and removing sound proofing and was amazed at the thickness of the metal it took a lot to cut through with the grinder.
and as to fitting it went on very easily after a good coat of engine lacquer all over and some copper slip up the joints.
i thought it was good value for the money but time will tell ;)

Agreed GM all the way for Exhausts, i paid £200 for cat back, which is 2 center sections and back box for my 2.2. All GM, paid local monkey £20 to fit  :y

I'll agree with all above. When I bought my MV6 it had a new exhaust recently fitted, so I thought "great means I probably won't have to replace it during my ownership". Wrong -- it was noisy whenever I put my foot down, and not a pleasant noise at that, more a drone. It was worst at between 1500-2500 RPM, which is an almost unavoidable rev range to use when driving in town and slow traffic. I often found myself revving it up in first then shifting to third to keep it out of that rev range trying to avoid the dreaded drone.

In the end I removed a perfectly "good" exhaust system that would probably have lasted at least a few more years, binned it and had a GM system fitted. The car is much quieter now and as a result my sanity is intact.

It's a perfect example of the truth in the old saying "do the job once -- do it right". Find someone local to you who has a Trade Club card and the bits aren't that expensive.
