The rattle recently experienced from the camshafts has taken a turn for the worst. Whilst giving it some welly this evening the engine started to knock loudly. Managed to get it home but does'nt sound good.

Any ideas what this might be.

The cambelt was changed recently. Could this sound be caused if it has slipped a couple of teeth.

I didn't notice an engine light whilst it was doing it.

Only other thing I can think I have done recently is spray some WD40 around the crank sensor to clean off some spilt oil.

Any help appreciated.

Dont know the history of you probs, but I would start by checking the timing marks to see if all is lining up.

DON'T DRIVE IT!

Could be a slipped cambelt, damage may already be done.

If you need help to check it, then yell.

Next job - cambelt cover off, check timing, timing belt, and condition of rollers.

sounds more like a big end has let go,(dull very nasty knock sounds like its coming from the very bowels of the engine)camshafts more of a rattle

Checked the cambelt and all looks good. The markings are lining up and there doesn't appear to be any unusual resistance when rotating the crank.

If it is one of the big ends, is this likely to be an expensive job. If so there could be a nice project car up for sale for some body.

The owner before me had the head gaskets replace last October. Is it possible that the garage could have done something wrong.

Sorry for all the questions. My initiation to V6 ownership is not going well. Owned a 4 pot Omega for 6 years and never had any problems.

Best way is to get someone to have a listen. If it's a heavy knocking, sensitive to engine load it's something in the bottom end. Tappets will be a light rattling, normally not sensitive to engine load and it'll be obvious that it's coming from the top end. Could be other things, like a siezed little end causing severe piston slap but either way it needs a stripdown if it's not tappets.

Removing the sump won't tell you much, unless to have the big ends out as well. Not sure the whole sump will come off in-situ and if it comes to that you're probably better off swapping the engine for a 2nd hand one, TBH.

Thanks for the replies. The noise I heard was a deffinate knocking coming from the engine and not the rattle of noisy camshafts.

I think my first try will be to contact the previous owner and see if I can get his garage to have a look bearing in mind they have not long replaced the HG's. Reading the posts on this site it is not common for pistons or big ends to fail on these cars so I am thinking they may have done something wrong.

Worth a try. Just glad I kept my 2.0l.
