Multi information display - dead pixels?
« on: 30 July 2007, 16:38:15 »

I've just bought an Omega 2.5 V6 auto '98 and it's got a few little faults, I hope someone can help with some info (BTW I've searched and this is a Q I can't find an answer to).

The multi information display on this car has quite a few dead pixels, it's just about readable but very annoying. Sometimes a dead pixel will flicker on then back off. Can the units be repaired or is it replace only? And can they be removed without removing the steering wheel?

Thanks in advance.

They are easy to remove, but are not really fixable.

To Remove:

Remove the air vents on the left of the dash, they just pull out with pliers, there are 2 screws behind it, take them out and remove the unit, there is one screw for the dash.
Remove the air vent on the right of the dash, the same way as the last one.
Remove the top piece of plasic cowling from the behind the sterring wheel, 2 screws, need to turn the steering wheel to access them, they are hiding under plastic covers. then there is a screw for the dash under that.

Then the dash should just pull out, there is no, speedo cable to worry about as its electronic, just a wire for the MID Dispaly, thats it the dash is out.

Now for repairing the MID, its not really servicable, but if it is just the odd pixel flashing , it might just need more pressure to the ribbon.

If you open up the unit, 4x plastic push clips, just take the back off. Then you will have to unsolder the 3 metal prongs for the time adjustment.
then the whole insides will come out, now if you look at where the ribbon is connected to the PCB, not the LCD end, on the white plastic box it is sitting on, there is a clear rubber band, you just need to put a tie clip or something similar underneath that, just to hold the ribbon to the board tighter, then re-assemble, and give it a try.

Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesent.... Made mine a bit better, but not perfect, but then I had about 30 pixels missing, more than were showing, and at least I can read it sort off, now.

Hope this helps, Thanks, Mark.  :y :y :y

The units are screwed to the instrument panel which is easy to remove (details in the maintenance guide area) without removing the steering wheel.

Repair of said item is very difficult and if sourcing a replacement you need to ensure you get one with the correct connector type.

Thanks for the removal info, sounds quite straight forward so I think I'll take it out to see if I can at least improve it and then I'll know what connector is on it anyway.

The dead pixels are spread all around the display but mainly in the lower half.

I have one that was remnoved from a 1999 MV6. It is perfect, just check the connectors. I will try and take a pic tomorrow. This has 4 bulbs at the back and (IIRC) a single grey plug.

I've just noticed that I've made a typo - doh  :-[

I put '98 and it should be '96 - sorry - and I copy/pasted it to two other threads - very stupid  :-[

I think it's more relevant to this thread than the others though.

Anyway I'm going to have a look at it in a few days when it's not being used.

Yes it was the one with 2 connectors and it's now fixed   :y

Thanks for the info on how to get at it, it was easy. When I got at the panel the ribbon cables connection to the circuit board had pulled away along half it's length. My solution was to remove it completely and then use my trusty Brasso to get some fresh metal showing on the ribbon and circuit board then carefully line it back up and put it back together.

It took a bit of patients but the display is now fully functional so it was worth it  ;D
