Suffering from frequent front bush problem
« on: 21 August 2007, 10:52:17 »

A bit of history first.

4 years ago had a wishbone replaced as bushes had gone (I did drive with failed bushesfor quite some time - naughty I know, but at the time I thought it was just warped discs).

1 year ago (and about 15K later) had to have both wishbones replaced again as both bushes went (also my trusted mechanic said it looked like the previous garage had only replaced one wishbone - not the two they charged me for - as one looked new and one looked very much like the original).  After the second round of replacement, i had full back and front re-alginement and the old tank ran like a dream for a while.

Today been to ATS because of excessive wear on left, and they checked alignment and then showed me on the ramp that both front tyres had excessive movement, and suggested that the bushes may be gone again (this is after less than 15K miles).

I will be taking it back to my trusted mechanic to see if the bushes have gone, but am loathed to throw yet more money on a 10year old if there is a bigger problem here.

BUT my question is that if it is the bushes again, what the heck could be going on, is there something else that needs looking at to point to whether the problem lies elsewhere.
So that maybe I can get the garage to check out anything else on the front end.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Is it the horizontal bush (front of the wishbone) or the vertical bush (rear of the wishbone).

If its the front one then they were probably in-correctly fitted as the bolts need to be tightened with the vehicle on the deck or the front bush is placed under continuous torsion which will cause it to fail quite quickly.

I will ask that question when I take it to the garage.

I assume a qualified Vauxhall dealer would know this!

I also had bad experience together these wishbones..First I changed the bushes lonely...Dont work...
After 3-4 months these give up.

Next time changed the wishbones at the opel dealer..Was really expensive ..But worth...2 years and still no problem..

Also may be will be good idea to check z-rots and s-rots with a trusted mechanic..

Sometimes some pattern wishbones don't last long. I had a set that failed after 8k miles (and no they weren't fitted incorrectly and it was the vertical bush that failed).

The genuine wishbones are VERY expensive and probably not a lot better than good pattern parts.

The wishbone bushes take a lot of punishment, curb the wheel and it'll be the wishbone bush that fails.

I assumed a qualified Vauxhall dealer wouldn't forget to hook back the fuseable connectors box on top of the battery... or loose the plenum dust caps... or invoice me for 'front wheel bearing adjustment' on the Omega... or.... the list goes on. Do not assume...  >:(

The title says it all...  Front Bush!   I have problems with mine,,,,  think it needs a trim!

Sorry couldn't resist....  Done well really, been resisting all day ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

However, ::)  I had a set of genuine bushes fitted... don't think it was a good job... car never ran straight even after Optiflex..  put a pair of e-bay ones on from VSC £45, Mark DTM recommended this supplier, the quality looks good too, had it Optiflexed...  (Full geometery set up) new tyres... straight as a die at the moment.. :y
