EML on and engine misfiring
« on: 07 October 2007, 21:14:52 »

Just had to drive 40 miles with a misfiring engine  :(  the eml has come on and the engine feels like it is running on 3 cylinders and when you start it up it stinks of petrol  :'(
Has anyone got a Tech 2 near Sittingbourne in Kent so I can see what the fault code is as apparently I can't carry out the paperclip test on a 2.2 petrol?

Don't continue to use the car with a misfire, the unburnt fuel will kill the precious metal in the catalytic converters.

Tests you can do before tech2 -

1) Compression test, get a tester of ebay for a tenner, very easy job. Hope to goodness your compressions are OK though

2) Check connection to the coil per plug pack is OK.

3) Remove the plugs, look for a black one, that will be the cylinder that's not firing.

A failed coil pack may not log a failt code, however using a Tech2 and test plugs, you should be able to identify if there is a strong spark on each plug...

Worth lifting the coil pack off and checking for oil (gasket failure), and checking plugs whilst there.  Thats cheaper than a Tech2 to tell you which cylinder is misfiring ;)

Alex

I have a 2.2 2001 CD Omega and have suffered with the same symptoms.

Took the advice from TB, it was oil in the plug wells.

I purchased new coil pack from Autovaux and new plugs, also new cam gasket as this had torn letting oil in.

Take your time fitting the gasket, ensure you get new o rings for bolts etc.

Mines as good as new "Touch wood"

Good luck

Right quick update  :(
I took all the plugs out today, cleaned and replaced them. Looks like some oil is getting onto the rear two plugs.
Put it all back together and now the car won't even start, just turns over  :o
What could I have done? I only cleaned the plugs  :-?

How much oil?  Check connector to coil pack properly inserted as well.
