Im going for a look at and test drive of an OMEGA 2.2 16V CDX ESTATE with 73'000 miles on it this weekend from a showroom ... is there any thing i should look out for on this model ie noises or anything i should pay paticular attention to...sorry if there has been a review on a separate page but i couldnt find anything

Check the idle is rock solid.
Insist the cambelt is changed, would need doing at 80K
Ask to see service history.
Put the steering on both locks and listen for noise.
Make sure all electrics works.
Rest is common sense.

What year is it?. Has it a full service history?  What is the price?

I would also check the tyres, exhaust, and whether the brakes have been replaced recently, along with how long is the MOT.

The cambelt was the first thing i asked about owing to my recent experience with belt failure ....they say it would be changed if i decide to take the car ....

Its a 2001... £3600 with years mot and 6 months tax thrown in ....does have sevice history although he says its not all vauxhall.... last service was at 69'000

Should be a nice motor with such low miles.

As jules says cambelt is due soon.  Personally I would get a quote and haggle that off the selling price - then you can make sure its done properly (inc full kit and waterpump)

Worth checking service history carefully  -regular coolant change would be good as the 4 pots can otherwise suffer head gasket failure.

I would also be looking at tyres , exhaust - these are 300 quid a pop items and if need doing soon should give you haggling oppy.

Look for cam cover oil leaks (not sure if you can easily pull plug leads on 2.2.   Not catastrophic but that's another 100 quid or so off the price.

stalling at idle is a common 4 pot problem - easily fixed though.

Suspension should still be fine at that mileage but always worth checking it runs (and brakes ) straight and true.  Check tyres for uneven wear - indicative of suspension wear or geometry setup needed.

I can only advise what I would look at when considering the purchase.
If you are happy with the engine/gearbox performance then take a look under the bonnet at state of it. Look for oil leaks cam covers and oil in the water and take the oil cap off to see if there is any build up of mayo on there.
Whilst on the test drive check for looseness in the steering and does it pull to one side. Pay particular to whether or not it bounces over bumps or it's damped ok, or any unusual noises. Obviously check the brakes, pull up sharp to test them, does pull to one side again. Bodywork check for rust bubbles tops and bottom of doors and rear wheel arches. My very first checks before even going on a test drive would be service history and recent bills for work done if any. And did it have a cambelt change at the required stage, important that one.
If in doubt at all on anything you may find a problem ask them to put it right before purchase.

Oh being an estate make sure it ok in the load area and not all knocked about and scruffy, it could have had an hard life lugging heavy loads, I was lucky with mine all it had had in the back was a dog.

Redpath & Mclean have a 70K CD 2001 for around £1700 quid if you fancy a bargain, it's the 2.5 auto box

Cosmetically a bit tatty but nothing a we bit of effort won't fix.

Would save you nearly 2K

Remember pre or post Mar 2001 will mean a 200 quid a year DIFFERENCE in road tax from next year.

Jules guide to auctions at Kinross.

First of all, call up www.smag.co.uk find lot number of car you are interested in.

Then telephone Lesley or whoever answers and politley ask (wording here is important) :

'I was wondering what the ballpark figure on lot xx might be'

She usually tells you the reserve. Take this with a pinch of salt, all it does is tell you where the finishing line might be, the reserve on mine was £1200 and I got it for £850.

Then go to auction and check out car while it's sitting.

If all looks good, wait until auction starts, when they unlock and start the car you get a chance to sit in it, look under the bonnet, play with the toys etc, you have to be quick.

Walk with the car to the auctioneer, talk to the driver about it etc etc.

then bid !

I usually make up my mind before the car moves and get the auctioneer to proxy bid for me. i tell him my limit and then just before the car goes on sale he will look for me and wait for me to nod that I do want him to bid.
