Having been to wheels-inmotion last week I was told that my front left shock absorber is on its way out. Tony could tell by the weird tyre wear pattern (an intermittent wear 2/3 of the way in and about 5cm in diameter every 10cm) of the tyre on that corner.

Question 1: Should I change both shocks at the same time whilst I'm at it, making that assumption that if one is going then the other will soon follow and thereby prevent the same waste of a tyre on the other side?

Question 2: Is changing front shocks an easy job? What's involved?

Question 3: If I do change both shocks then I'd go for MV6 shocks as I have just had MV6 springs fitted. Does anyone know what sort of price these are? (I do have a Trade Card)

Question 4: Are Vx shocks the best ones to go for?

Question 5: Do you think I'll need to replace that tyre or will it eventually wear itself back into an even keel? If so should I change both front tyres (apart from the weird wear pattern on the near-side resulting from the shock issue they are in very good condition and being 235x35x19 are expensive)

Just bought full set of Bilstein shocks. I didnīt even ask for original..

Are those the correct height for your MV6 or is your car lowered?

What sort of price were they and do you feel that they are an improvement?

I havenīt installed them yet. They are shorter ones (B8-Sprint) so i bought a set of H&R -35mm springs  for them. All those costs about 900 euros here.
Hmm, i did go out and measure that current height.
Front is now at 37cm, measured from center of the hub to arch and rear 36.5cm.

I might change them tomorrow....

Always replace suspension componenets in pairs.

Bit more time consuming to do fronts, and will need alignment redone due to camber...

OK, will replace both front shocks. I don't want to lower the car any more than a standard MV6 height.

Vx shockz on TC are just under Ģ46 ex VAT each, as for the tyre wear well I had the same problem, did post a thread on it with pictures, the tyres still outside in the front garden :-?....Had to get the geometry done and changed the affected tyre, mine had excessive wear on a section of the front inside of the tyre, and had already changed the tyre on other side similar problem ......unfortunately expensive and annoying as still plenty wear on the tyres

My wear problem is slightly different; I have more deeply worn patches about 10cm apart all the way around the circumference and toward the centre of the tyre. When you roll a trye off the car on a flat concrete surface you get regular palm sized dark patches where the tyre no longer touches the dust no far off the centre of the tyre tread and all the way round the tyre. It now causes an annoying slight 'chirruping' sound when cruising at speed on the motrway and a very mild wobble feedback through the steering. (not as much as though the wheels are out of balance though, I've had this checked at WIM)

Both my front tyres (apart from this wear on one side) are really good.

I suppose I'm back to question 5 now; do I need to replace that tyre or will it wear itself back onto an even keel? If I need to replace it, should I change both front tyres when I change both front shocks? :-/

Are Vx shocks the way to go if I don't want to lower the car?

re point 5:  I'd either do a front back tyre swap or give it a few months to see how the tyre wears.  As long as the tyre is safe/legal etc, I'd see how it goes: no point spending money when it is not needed

My problem is that my car is an Elite, but with MV6 springs all round. I'm going to change all 4 shocks for the self-levelling MV6 shocks from Vx.

Also any advice if my local Vx stealer doesn't give me good TC prices?

From what I gather from this thread, and Tunnie's, is that the fronts sould be roughly 46+VAT and the rears around 45+VAT. So Ģ220 should cover the full set, but I know that when I asked about a set of springs Evans Halshaw in Bedford quoted nearly Ģ600.

I bought KYB ones from a local motor factor, which are same as OEM i belive.

Ģ44 each  

My local stealer knows me now, so can almost always get TC  

I should be doing my rear shocks this weekend if thats any use?

You're not too far from me in the Brackley area aren't you? Would you ask your dealer what the part numbers and prices are please?

MV6 for a self-levelling version.

Are they an easy job to change yourself, or should I get them done at WIM seeing as I'll have to get the car set up again anyway?
