2.5td misfire ???
« on: 16 September 2008, 19:57:02 »

Got a strange problem on my 1999 2.5 td .  Sometimes , but not all the time , when coming to a halt with the engine ticking over , it feels very lumpy as if it's only firing on 4 cylinders . On accelerating again it's ok and doesn't seem to be lacking in power . Doesn't do it again for a while and drives very smoothly the rest of the time (for a diesel !)  Any ideas anyone ?

Eml doesn't flicker , mileage 77000 . It 's one of those faults that could be almost anything I suppose , it doesn't really bother me as long as it doesn't get any worse, but you know how it is with things it might be a symptom of a major problem , so it niggles away at the back of your mind.

ok def try the diesel magic trick then!!! this will prob cure it this fault is ususally caused by a diet of supermarket fuel you been using it ?
buy new fuel filter and can of diesel magic(halfords and many other good shops sell it) have tried other injector cleaners but none seem to do it as well as diesel magic!!
pour d.m. straight into new filter and fit it , run engine for ten mons at about 1500 rpm, then take for a run of about 5 or ten miles verying the rpms as much as poss, car may cough and splutter during first couple of mins, ignore it it may well smoke a bit as well dont worry about it, sometimes if the dirt on the pump pot is tough it may take two goes to totally eradicate the faults but try it and see how it goes!!

ASDA fuel has always been fine for my TD, it doesn't seem to like Sainsburys diesel though......Don't know if there is any different but mine seem to run really poorly whilst I had the latter stuff in..

Can't say i've used Asda or Sainsbury's much , neither very near us ,but I've had a problem with Morrison's diesel in an Espace. Filled up and went to Essex and back with the wife and four kids and it wouldn't go up hills properly on the M11 unless I changed down to 4th and was generally sluggish. Did the same journey with the same people a few weeks later with different fuel and it went up the same hills in 5th and was generally quicker .   I could only put it down to the fuel, nothing else was different .

Guys, you ae all getting the wrong end of the stick!!! Omega will run quite happily on the supermarket fuels, but as you know the TD has a fly by wire throttle, inside the pump is for want of a better word a potentiometer when you press the pedal the electronics move the pump position to the throttle required posistion in the pump, now what happens with lower quality fuels is the pot gets covered in crap and starts to lose certain bits of the track board signal, when it gets really bad you get driveability problems sometimes bad enough to warrant the pump being replaced >:( othertimes you get silly niggley faults like the above, the diesel mGIC TRICK CLEANS THE POT OF CRAP AND ALLOWS IT TO GET THE CORRECT VOLTAGES REQUIRED!!
so aids driveability and cures many little faults, its always worth a go before anything else, maf sensor failing gives a similar fault but a clean pump is always a good start to any diesel diagnosis, worst one i have done was a range rover dse the dealer wanted to fit a new pump, i did the diesel magic trick 4 times and each time it got better and better till now the rr runs as it should and has been running perfectly for the past 13months!! in fact am going to see it when im back in the uk next month just to check it over for the nice lady owner!!! :y

Glad to find this advice I am having same problem myself with 2000 TD Auto 175 k on clock. Have to admit I have run on Bio - Diesel for a year quite happily but idle went rough before Xmas. Changing fuel filter and running on expensive Shell diesel, putting Diesel Magic in tank didn't fix it but I will now try filling filter with Diesel Magic as above.

Thanks

Pete do the diesel magic trick first then after about 30 miles boot the crap out of it e.g. italian tune up. :y
When I had my TD I stuck to BP or Shell proper diesel not the 7% added bio crap its dearer but better.

Thanks! Tried diesel magic trick twice, idling slightly better but by no means cured. Engine runs fine apart from when stationary. Getting fault code 64 - fuel quantity control out of range. Will try booting it. Any other suggestions? Is it worth repeating four times as above?

In case anyone else gets this problem, it has cleared now without repeating diesel magic trick but after using a few more tanks of regular non supermarket diesel. This is despite a diesel "expert" saying I would need a new pump at far more than the car is worth. So it looks likely that it was dirt in the injection pump caused by extended (10 months) running on 100% Bio Diesel, perhaps not surprising as it is recycled cooking oil!  I won't risk using it again.
