Starter Motor fried on 2.5 TD Help...

Could anyone tell me on how to change the starter on my 2.5 TD (BMW version), the only way I can see is to remove the inlet manifold...

yup, thats correct.

Really easy job on tractor:

Remove engine plastics/viscous fan/intake.

Remove 4 wires from back of starter (after disconnecting battery, obviously

2 nuts and bolts hold starter on.



And yes, I have done it loads of times.  Even keep a spare in garage ::)

swapped one from underneath and didnt disconnect battery!!!! its tight but you have to be gentle and careful but i had a skinny blole who could fit his arm down beside the inlet to put the top starter nut back on, was rather pleased i did it ths way!!! :y

A pig on an auto though....

Much, much, much, much, million times much easier to do it from top.

Talking of piss and intakes off, Mr Omegatoy, I may be after getting your hands dirty ::) - as discussed Friday down pub, I appear to be pissing diesel all over the M40  :-X

ive taken mine off from underneath umpteen times [for obvious reasons],when re-fitting word of advice for the top nut holding the starter in, either get a thin walled plain nut [not locking] & run that up the bolt first & tighten, this allows you to put the locking nut on without having to hold the bolt with a spanner as its a sod to get to, or you can grind off the locking part of the nut so it runs freely up the bolt & do it up tight with a socket & to hell with the locker ;), you could put a spring washer on first if you have one which would help keep it tight, but i didnt so i didnt ;),,,good luck :y

Thank you all,  I had a mate reckon it would be better to do it from underneath, it took about 2 hours to get the F***ing thing off...  So when I put it back on, I'll be removing the manifold...

The Good Honest A/T guy who changed my tranny after i drove thru a flood when the breather had fallen off. Water inthe atf , reverse was the first to go. He def did it from underneath. The last time I changed the glow plugs I could not bully the manifold off. Had to resort to dexterity.

The inlet is 10 mins max, if you dont have a stupid viscous on ;)
