dot matrix display dead
« on: 19 October 2008, 14:24:51 »

Hi

I have a 2001 3 liter elite. In the last few months a lot of  things have gone wrong, breaks, susspension, tensioner bearing siezer and more costing £2500 to put right. Each time I come back from the garage something else goes wrong. Lost all faith in the garage apart from empty pocket.

Now the ornage dot matrix display panel seems to have died. It is not diplaying anything at all. The radio/cd still works with lesser functionality. I want to try and tackle this myself. Are there any common faults in this area which would cause this? Or is it expensive job of getting a replacement one?

thanks

1: Welcome.

2: He's right above^^^; you need to define what the stereo is doing to give us a better idea.

3: Stop pouring money into it and check on here for friendly and much cheaper advice 1st.

4: This sounds like an electrical problem so might get better coverage on the "ICE" section.

5: Have a look on the OOF Map (link above in the top bar and PM me for the password) to see where we are all based. You may find a member very close to you who can take a look for you.

6: Update your profile with your car model, year and your location. It will help people to diagnose and to offer help if they are local.

7: If all else fails and you find that you do need to get a replacement screen, I may have one available from a Siemens NCDC2013 stereo from a 2001 Facelift Elite Omega.

Welcome again. Sorry you've been having problems with it, but it is worth persevering, they are cracking cars.

was the service schedule followed for the cam/aux belts? 40k or 4 years? Anyway, all as Albatross says really. You will not find a better value car, so its def worth keeping on top of the serviceing and maintenance. More regular oil changes and clean the breather system will always improve things.

As for the the display, dont worry to much, if its broken they can be recond, but recent developments in the security codeing by the real experts on here mean you "May" be able to upgrade to a colour screen for more reasonable money in the near future. In the mean time, disconnect the battery for 5 mins and see if they re-pair. I had similar when changing dash bulbs which ment un plugging the screen. You may well need to reset the windows and sunroof if you do this though.

I can confirm that an upgrade to colour information display (CID) is technically possible if you can find one. I did, which is why I have an amber screen in the cupboard under the stairs. The CID are a bit pricey though.

The uys with Tech2 machines can do the swap for you. You can't do it without this. It is all to do with unpairing and then re-pairing the screens with the stereo head unit for security reasons.

What stereo? NCDC type, with built in satnav (I'm guessing it is), or the CCR2006 with the MID?

If the latter, MIDs can be picked up cheaply 2nd hand, and your type are very reliable.

If its Satnav one, if its orange half height display, possibly backlight bulbs, it takes 3 of them.

If its satnav one with colour display, you are up a smelly creek looking for an oar.

If the stereo is NCDC type, you cannot just change the screen, its not that simple. The old screen needs to be decoded from radio, then the replacement recoded.
