timing belt and what else?
« on: 10 December 2008, 19:13:30 »

Good evening people...
last time i had my timing belt changed at the main dealers 18 months ago they pointed out i had a slight water leak from somewhere that was only visible while taking car apart. cant remember what they said it was.  As it'll be due for a belt  change again within the next 10k i'd rather have that leak seen to at the same time so any ideas what this could be and if so do i need to be a pimp to my wife to earn extra cash to pay for it?

I'm assuming it wasn't the waterpump as they should have changed it anyway esp if it was leaking.    If they didn't change it last time, get it done this time regardless.

Beyond that it could be the stat housing or something else in the V which they could see with the front stripped off.

Are you noticably losing coolant?

Sorry i should had added more detail. The water pump was changed at the same time and the amount of coolant i'm loosing is around half a pint every 1k miles so not much but there non the less.

Sounds like the hbv is leaking, does it show beneath the car?

no i cant see any signs of drips although i can smell coolant at times but cant pinpoint the area....would the H.B.V be on view while changing the timing belt though?

just about - its behind the stat.   Is it a 3L or 2.5?  If 3L they would have had the plenum off to change the belt, and could see the HBV better.

1/2 pint every 1k miles IS quite a lot, but if HBV I would have thought it would have gone big time by now.

Maybe worth taking off the scuttle panel which allows you to see the hbv quite easily, you may then see water marks down the pipes... if you could slightly pressurise the system only to able 10-15lb you may see the water...
Other than that it could be oil cooler plate, coolant bridge, tranfer pipe... which plenum etc needs to be removed to see properly  :y

you can just about see the HBV if you stand next to drivers side wheel and shine a torch in.

If there is no sign of an actual leak .. then 1/2 pint in 1000 miles could be lost though a badly sealing Expansion cap quite easily. If the cap does not seal correctly, and pressurise the system, the water will evaporate at quite a fast rate ... been there got the T-shirt ... took ages to sus out but a new cap fixed the problem instantly.
