V6 engine conversion
« on: 03 February 2009, 13:12:29 »

Hello everyone,

I have a Reliant Scimitar SE6A and want to replace the boat anchor of an engine (Ford Essex 2.9 V6) with a decent Vauxhall 3L V6.

So what I need is a good 3L engine, and a manual box. Now I realise that the manual 3L is a little rare, but I'm guessing that a 3L auto engine will fit a 2.5L manual box? I'm also guessing the same for the flywheel and clutch arrangement on a 3L (changing from viscous to manual that is).

To get me going I'll also need the ECU and complete wiring loom. Just how transplantable are these engines?

Just to make sure my final drive is correct what is the diff ratio of a V6 Omega?

Finally does anyone have any of these parts and are local to Somerset? Cash waiting!

Cheers

a 3.0V6 will fit a 2.5V6 Manual box, but it will shred it in just a few miles.

If your fitting a 3.0V6 you must fit the R28 manual box (as fitted to 3.0/3.2's), look for ex-plod cars being broke for them  :y

You need engine with loom, ECU, ECU loom, immobiliser pickup, immobiliser chip from key.

I suggest break an ex plod 3.0 your self, or contact a skilled breaker from this forum who can dig out all the wiring for you

Not true......the R25 will probably last equaly as long as the R28!

We are talking MANUAL boxes, not the autos!

As for transplant, wiring should be pretty easy as the engine loom with ecu etc is a standalone item which only requires a few external connection (vehicle speed, immobiliser plus a few others).

Diff ratio varies but manaual is generaly 3.9:1

The 3.0 is a very compact unit and with better headers can get an easy 240bhp with little work

I thought the Essex were 2.5 & 3.0 .....  :-/
The 2.9 12 valve is a Cologne isn't it?  :-/ and is  the engine fitted to the Middlebridge versions.  :-/ :-/

Anyway, how fast do you want to go in a car that uses an antiquated front suspension with trunions in it ?  ;) :y

Good point about the Essex, it is indeed 3L, and all iron so very heavy.

How fast do I want to go in a car with trunions?   As fast as posible, this car is entered into the Practical Performace Car magazines £999 challenge. I'm off to Mallory park in it at the end of May, it needs to complete a standing quarter mile, autotest and lap of Mallory park.   Much fun indeed, Oh and it need to be road legal.

Well I've just been chatting to a mate who is scrapping a Frontera 3.2 limited. Will the 3.2 V6 also fit an R28?

Looking at the spec it's 205bhp and 214lbs/ft

Cheers

That door handle mould must have paid for itself millions of times over. Marinas, Allegros, Range Rovers, etc etc

Nice Scimitar though

Why don't you try putting a Rover V8 lump with 5 speed box in it as will probably be lighter than both Ford and VXs V6 lumps and has more scope for power improvements :).

Cue Mark!

Actually the Rover V8 is getting a little more difficult to find now.
