Hi all I am new here but thought I would add my fuel consumption figures. around town I get 29mpg but on a run I have got 45mpg but usually 42MPG this is a 2.5TD Auto with 128K on the clock. Mixture of cruising and sports mode. :y
thats what I would expect unchipped, 30 around town, 40 on a decent steady run

Still too early to draw conclusion, but I hope the economy is fantastic now, seeing as driving an unchipped tractor has turned me into Little Miss Daisy  :-[

Would a knackered themostat  cause my TD to drink more diesel.
Thinking mine seems to be a bit heavy on consumption just lately, but the temp gauge hardly moves, been like it for ages now and only ever gets up to normal when I have the van in tow........BTW it's chipped as well.

Right, over a tank, with the std chip in, the fuel computer is dead accurate, and it returned a piss poor 29mpg, and managed approx 450 miles.  I have been Miss Daisy though.

That MPG is similar to what I get with the chip in (around 30mpg, 450 to a tank) with my lead boot, though fuel computer reads around 40mpg.

I used to get high 30s out of it (pre chipped).

I'm confused, as normal....

What about refitting the chip, brimming the tank, and measuring the MPG again? Bit of a pain I know, probably the only accurate way of measuring consumption. Still 30mpg from a chipped auto tractor ain't bad Jamie - considering your 'leaded' right foot .... !
I've also noticed my tractor seems thirstier recently too. Could be the cold weather, although it warms-up reasonably normally. Hmmmm?

What you two have described about your TD's is exactly how mine is at the moment.............mine has a knackered stat though so hoping to sort that soon and things improve.

Cold weather starting and short journeys can't be helping though, although I don't use mine that much these days.

Agreed Mick - cold weather, short stop/start journeys and a knackered 'stat = ineffective combustion and increased fuel consumption.

I know the (real) MPG of the chip.  Around 30mpg.

Unchipped, driving slowly, is disappointing, esp considering there was a 130m trip to Reading and back...

When I first got it, I could easily manage 35-37mpg, and that was with a knackered HG/head...

All the situations in this thread appear to relate to my car too!

I have got a knackered stat, so over these cold few months the TD has been drinking diesel as the temp never exceeds 87.5 (running w/o viscous).

I have been getting 500 miles to a tank (not hanging around - but some steady), whereas in the summer as getting 600.

When going properly in right conditions I would get 40ish average with 50 on a run (from the MID so 2-3 less in reality, IME) - I think this is about the benchmark for manuals.

It is difficult to compare chipped and non-chipped consumption under the same driving conditions simply because your driving style changes so much!

Stat dead easy, esp if you have already disposed of that gay viscous!  30mins tops, and 5 mins of that is refilling coolant ;D
