i would imagine its a straight swap over as i dont believe its fitted with the immobiliser system like some diesels do [transits i think], as youve got the pump anyway you may as well fit it & see what happens, never had to do one myself so dont know how difficult it is to do but good luck with it :y

hmmm, never thought of that :-/, & the haynes manual dont cover a diesel, dont suppose its a matter of lining up the old one in a set position then put the new one in the position the old one was at, perhaps a manual from other that use the same lump might be available[landrover td5 or the bmw etc] that could help, but im sure there is somebody on here thats in the know on these things & perhaps they will tell you how,,,,good luck :y

you need couple of special tools to hold the timing chain in place for a start, or you strip off the timing cover and chains and do it that way, if the ecu had the same 10 digit code as yours then your ecu will driv e the pump o problem, but its very unusual for a pump to die completely, whats the symptoms of your old pump???

Maybe you have two problems. I breaked around for ages with my liftpump before changing the leak off pipes (thanks OOF) They had looked fine but after changing the car started perfectly. The auto thing might be something different. ::)

if it starts and runs fine from cold dont see how it can be injector pump> sounds like air in system to me? if it changes down at 70 and revs higher then it isnt pump wondering if you have a dodgy autobox???
leak off pipes sound a fair bet.
for hot starting try pouring cold water over the ijector pump when its hot, if it starts fsirly easily then its fuel temp sender goosed in the pump this can be changed in situ :y

if you do have to change pump there is an imobilizer fitted on pump so will have to swap these over they are held in with a odd shape bolt but got it off with a small chisel on the last one i changed

This hot-starting problem is a 'pain in the proverbial' on 2.5TDs .....

Mine was exactly the same - after a new pump (1240 quid) and No4 Injector (300 quid).
In desperation, I fitted a brand-new correct-spec battery (65 quid) and 'right as rain' for the last year. Lads here then chipped it and now I've got a quick-starting flying-machine.
I'd certainly try the cold water test first, and change all of the leak-off pipes as a matter of course. Then, if the alternator output is okay, fit a new battery like me.
Much easier than changing the injection pump, and nothing to lose.
Gear-change problem, is, I reckon, a seperate issue here.
