Need to replace a couple of tyres (195/65) on my car and noticed yesterday the other 2 good tyres of size 205/65 15.

Also noticed one of them is a marked V while the rest are H marked.

Is the legal to have 2 tyres 205/65 while the rest are 195/65, and also can I retain 205/65 at the rear while I use 195/65 in front?

Fingers crossed, I do not need to replace all 4

as far as i know as long as the two fronts are the same and the two rears are the same the fronts and rears dont have to be the same :-/

You need to have the correct speed rating for the car as specified by the manufacturer on all 4 tyres. No idea what the rating is for that size tyre, I would suspect its V but the manual will give you the answer.

Although its called 'speed rating' it also relates to the weight bearing capacity of the tyre under load and speed including sidewall flex rates which is why you will find high speed rated tyres on cars that will never achieve the actual rated speed.

I can tell you from experience with the TVR (its hard to get Z rated tyres in correct 15" size!)  that if you put tyres on the are not of the correct speed rating you must inform your insurer otherwise your insurance *may* be invalidated. It is something they will check should you have a major prang.

ETA: H is up to 130mph V is up to 149mph

As already mentioned, V rating would be preferable.
As for "legality", I believe both tyres on same axle must be the same rating and size

Tyres are one of the first things insurance investigators check in the event of a claim following an RTA.  Any variation gives them the grounds to challange the validity of the claim.  I wouldn't take the chance.  Tyres are the only point of contact with the road after all and you have precious little surface area to keep you going in the direction intended.

Per the manual I can use 195/65 with 91H speed rating or 205/65 with 94V

So I have decided to leave the rear ones at 205/65 94V and the front ones will be 165/95 91H

Checked with my insure company - changing to a 16" alloy would cost me more to insure so I have ruled that as an option.

Do you reckon changing to 206/65 94V is worth the extra spend? What might be the benefits when compared to 195/65 91H?

This speed rating thing always makes me laugh= V,W,Z etc. We can only 70mph
I wonder if when we all have limiters fitted through GPS, they'll still insist on us having rated tyres then :-?

Sorry to say but it will not go any faster than 2.5V6 on V's!!!


In the meantime, something rarely mentioned, you also have to consider weight rating: you need 91 or higher
