I'm thinking poor connection on the temp sensor, but that normally causes gauge to bounce about.  Thats why ecu reading would be handy...

Gauge was moving fast, i thought it was stat.

From cold it went to from 0 - 85

Stat opened

Dropped to 80

Raised to 85 again

Then dropped to 80, raised slightly to 81, stayed stable.

it ran hotter today, on a steady run it smoothed out and sat at just under 85. shall see what it does on the way back, but it seams to have fixed itself :)

Remember pre and facelift gueges show differing caliobrations.  Mid guage is the best marker....   :y

Have you been on the 65o proof again?  :-/  :-/

 ;)  ;)  ;D  ;D  ;D :y

Dyslexic fingers!   ;D   ;D  ;D

Gist of post is correct though.  Pre and post facelift numberings are different although needle deflection is the same....

Ok its confirmed as running cooler than normal. Got a tech2 plug in, the gauge is being accurate.

After i changed the stat some time ago, it would always sit at 85c on the temp, driven hard or soft, 60 cruise or 80 cruise always sat at 85c.

Today on the way home it was reading 79/78 at a 80mph cruise.

Spanking it away from the roundabouts i managed to get the temp to 85c, but as soon as i eased off, the temp dropped back to 79.

Now i got the temp from 79-85c very quickly, and it dropped just as quick.

It was 79 when i entered a housing estate, doing 30mph for a little bit (30 seconds) temp raised to 85c, then within 10 secs dropped back to 79.

Wtf is going on?

At the weekend i cleaned the throttle body and used a new gasket, cleaned the EGR. Coolant level is ok, using Vx Red.

Only new component was the coil pack, thats brand spankers from Vx.

Any ideas!?

My omega temp gauge always sits at around 80, had the thermostat changed around 2-3 months ago, genuine part, just thought this was normal for the 2.2.   :-/

can you tell if the fan , esp high speed fan, is coming on when it shouldn't?

I can't tell when driving as 4pots only have 1 fan. but when stopped and left idling the fan stays off. only thing I  can think of is the coil pack. its the only new element. I might switch them back

Don't you have an AC fan in front of the radiator?
and (at least on the V6) the big fan behind the rad is two speed which should be temp dependent.

I guess its no big job to switch DIS pack on the 4 pot so I guess its worth a try, but I can't figure why that would make a difference.   Why did you change it originally?

If the fans are behaving , it starts to sound like the stat is sticking, even though its pretty new.. :-/

Stat is less than a year old, coil pack changed due to slighly occasional miss-fire at low revs, it just was not pulling as well as it should.

Shouldn't make any difference if the fans running as it's the Stat that stops the car getting to cool and will do even if the fans are running flat out.

Looks like it's the stat, after reading this I've changed my stat again, put a orginal 1 in around 3 months and gauage sat at 80 as i said before, new stat in today and it now sits a 85.

Probably the stat as can't see anything else affecting it as long as it's all been bled okay.

Its just odd that the temp dropped just as i did that work, as the day before it was running fine!  :-/
