A simple controll of that the ecu gets its signal would be smart before changing it.
The fact that your ecu doesn't give you the lamp before you move the car is also a sign of an faulty signal from one of the wheels, but it can be an internal problem in the ecu...
You can use a simple OHM meter to check the sensors, and if they are ok. check that the sensors are occilating (use an voltmeter and set it at AC current, they will give you 0.1-1 volt ac when you spin the wheels.)
The sensor wiring are best located as four shielded wires entering the plug to the ecu.
The occilating test is important since a damaged sensor head ore damaged/missing sensor ring can fool you on the ohm test saying thats its ok, but you still have no signal.
Also check the brakeswitch located on your pedal, this engages the abs pump, if you have cruise control fitted you can notice if the system release when you brake.
