Changed Steering Column To Adjustable.
« on: 15 July 2009, 23:29:20 »

Hi all,
I've just changed(a job I've been intending to do for quite a while now)the non-adjustable steering column on my 96 Elite for an adjustable one and what a difference it makes to the comfort and driving position :).
I used the info. given in the maintenance section supplied by matchless(thanks matchless) which was very easy to follow and was a surprisingly straight forward job to carry out and well worth doing if your a bulkier chap such as me ::).

On another matter, i haven't started the engine for about 3 1/2 months and would like to turn the engine over without it actually starting so as to push some oil round, so can someone let me know the best way to do this and if you think It's necessary :-/ :question.

         Thanks,
                    Pete.

Glad the column job went well, they are brilliant. As for the turning over thing, I am sure it is a good idea,Use the starting handl - Oh no, we don't have thise any more!!!  I would have thought a spanner on the crank would be the best way. Any opinions?

Can you not take your immobiliser chip out of your key?

Think the engine cranks but won't start

Thanks Agemo, yes certainly a worthwhile mod.

As for turning the engine over and using a starting handle, are you talking from experience, if so your showing you age now ;D.
I was thinking because of the cats i don't want to just turn it over without it starting but still pumping petrol in to the cylinders, and was wondering if there was a way to do it :question.

        Thanks,
                   Pete :y.

I see, I was under the impression that when the immobiliser kicked in it would cut the fuel supply. Fuse idea sounds better though  :y

Thanks Alf, Certainly was worth the effort and as for any tricky bits, taking the electric plug off from the left hand side of the column(round plug other end of ignition switch)place a flat bladed screwdriver or similar between joint(1st joint in from the left)and prise it apart a bit at a time, it will come off eventually :y.
To remove the middle support bracket bolt i removed the instrument pod which made it a doddle to access :y.
The sheer bolt i removed by just tapping it round with a cold chisel and removed it with my fingers after 1 full turn :y.
    HTH Alf :).

As for the fuse do you know which one this is and is it under the column or the bonnet :question.

I'm not sure to be honest Toby but as you say Alf's idea of the fuse sounds the way to go, thanks anyway for your advise :y.

Good point about pulling the fuse, never thought about pumping fuel into the cats. I was also going to ask about why you don't want to run the engine. Oh and the starting handle - had one on my HA Viva, so yes, showing my age all right.
