BUT, my latest 2.5TD runs like the proverbial dream, and that's in un-chipped form!
Although you won't win any races, you've go to drive it like you stole it. Keep the big straight-six 'on song' and it'll happily cruise at 80+ mph all day long.
I know of two OOFers hereabouts who attain 33mpg from theirs - so pretty creditable economy.
Forget a 2.5TD auto though - they seem to be unhappy chappies.

My chipped 2.5TD with AR35 (ex The Boys) never drops below 34mpg around town and on more than one occassion i've had over 50mpg on long runs, so I wouldn't say its too bad on the dark stuff.

As long as you allow for the 2 second, let me think about it, delay when you floor it off the lights, then its not at all sluggish either.

Just had to replace the thermostat, exp tank cap and checked the water pump as it was begining to overheat slightly. That along with the battery and std service items is just about all i've spent on it since I got it 10 months and 17,000 miles ago.

I honestly cant think of another car, for the price I paid, that could have a better mixture of speed, economy, comfort and toys. (I would have loved a Lexus LS400 but couldn't put up with 16mpg on a good day)
