Spare Key
« on: 31 January 2010, 13:52:02 »

Is there anyway of obtaining  a spare key  ( three button) for my recently acquired  2003 V6 without paying the terrible price from main dealer £96 for key £46 to programme key.  I also like to have a key just to open doors but the key cutter said that he  might mess up electronics on present key if he uses it to copy. Any views.

You need the car pass, its a credit card sized piece of paper with the details of the car on it.

You can buy a new fob and blank blade from eBay. Get the key cut, then take the key and fob either to be a dealer to be coded to the car, or one of our members with tech2.

Kevin Wood in Alton, has tech2, and can program keys, worth dropping him a PM  :y

If you have a car pass you can order a new key (with transponder but no remote) from a main dealer for not too much (about 30 quid IIRC). Just tell them you don't need it coding to the car. Or get it cut, as said. The remote and immobiiser chip can be removed to avoid damage although I can't see how a ket cutter would damage the electronics.

Remotes - there are at east 3 different types which are not compatibe with each other. They can be got 2nd hand on Ebay if you're careful to get the right type but, again, not too costly new from a dealer (40 odd quid IIRC). See if you can read the information on the back of the fob. Often it rubs off and becomes illegible. Better stil, post a picture of the circuit board inside.

Pairing these items with the car we can do with a Tech 2 for a lot less than £46.

Thanks Kevin My details on the fob are all erased, but I can probably get the details from the main dealer. I am loathe to take the key apart as it is the only one that I have

TB used to have blank keys with a transponder for sale - might be worth PMing him.  If not I got one off ebay for about £7, got it cut FOC and TB programmed it to car with Tech2.  Alot cheaper than dealer prices!! ;)

Thanks debug  being new to the forum how do I contact TB. On getting the key cut did you dismantle your key to get the blank cut The locksmith told me there was a risk of damaging the electronics whilst using the original for matching. Thanks for the web address

Thats 'dangle berries' mate - my guy laser cut the blank using my existing as a pattern without dismantling.

Had no probs since with either key or remote.

Thanks debug Can you clarify for an idiot like me .I now find that I do not have the car pass I assume therefore that I have to go to a main dealer to get a key to the correct profile and they then have to programme it for the immobiliser. I can then programme the key for the alarm myself  in the car. Without the codes I assume that I am lost. What would you do if you have one working key and want to get a spare remembering that I do not have the codes from the car pass.

Coding any new keys to the car requires the security number from the car pass. Without it you can only cut a key blade which will get you into the car in an emergency but will set the alarm off and it won't start the engine.

Vx will sell you a car pass for your car - cheaper than a replacement key from them!!

Shop around for carpasses - some dealers want £50, some only want £15.

Not sure about passcards and buttons - i think my '96 model predates that, just an ordinary key-in-lock, though it has jammed and the garage is looking at it today. :)
