X30XE Engine Cutting Out / Refusing to Start
« on: 19 April 2010, 15:35:32 »

Hi all,

Have only got the Omega back on the road recently, well only at the weekend actually.  Aside from a flat battery (the car was sat SORN’ed for just over a year) which I think has caused my airbag light to come on and need resetting, everything has been fine.  It has been starting fine, idling fine and driving like a dream until today; heading down the dual carriageway and the engine management and battery lights come on and she stops, freewheeling to safety thanks to having a lay-by within distance.  Battery is fine (its brand new) and the car turns over but did not want to restart, after about 30 minutes being left it did start but then duly cut out again.

RAC come out and tow the car home, they are unable to use their diagnostic equipment as it didn’t want to connect, however, based on my limited knowledge and the opinion of the patrolman it sounds like the crank sensor?

I have done a paper clip test and it does indeed throw out a code ’19’ which would further confirm the crank sensor but it also has a few other codes, here’s the sequence of codes ignoring ‘12’:

19
49
48
73

Can anyone offer some help; could it be that some of these codes are from old problems or would they automatically reset?  Does it still seem likely to be the crank sensor only or something else?  Incidentally, I performed the paper clip test both with the engine running and just the ignition circuit live.

Help!

Change the crank sensor. 48 & 49 are telling you battery charge is low

Your diagnosis of a crank sensor is bang on!

The dealer will try to sell you wrong sensor, all 3.0l and 2.6/3.2 take the same, cheaper sensor.

Thanks all, is the '73' code anything to worry about or is it related?

Does anyone have a part number and/or cost for the replacement, local Vx dealer with the VRM is quoted around £95+VAT...

Thanks again.

Its an inconsistency in EPC when using the registration/vin filters, throws up the wrong part ;)

Hope it's right for 1600 Astras, I've just bought a crank sensor for a mate's car using the registration number  :-?  ;D

Hi
It depends on the year of 3L, mine uses the 90492006 crank sensor, so not all 3L use the cheap one (wish mine did!)
Alan

PS Unless a past owner has fitted the wrong one and as it worked I've perpetuated the error!!

Elite now gone.  Bought an X-Type 4x4.  If there had been an Omega 4x4 I would have bought that instead.  We really liked the Omega, but I wanted 4x4.
