L/S Diffs

I have a question about L/S diff's. I drive an 03 ex-plod 3.2 with an LSD. yesterday did an oil change and if you had seen the muck that came out, I think the oil had never been changed. Anyway the car has done 171K and the diff knows it. My question is this can I fit an LSD out off a 3.0ltr Vectra are they the same ratio. Do not know the year of the Vec but have been told it had done about 80K, If the answer is yes what is a good price? have been told £200. :-?

Don't know I've never had one. May be it was a mig you have me thinking now. I surpose the only way is get him to drag it out and check the ratio. what is the ratio on the mig or have I got to jack up the car again.

Joff, how easy was it to change the oil on the LSD? What oil/how much does it take, would like to do mine. Regarding vectra, front wheel drive so guessing LSD wouldn't suit, don't know if getting LSD recon'd would be an idea? There can't be many, if any, out there that haven't been ragged half to death

not sure, but whatever dif it is, it aint off a vectra. Others will know how to check the gear and slip ratios.


But while your there,
Plod dif's usually lower geared than customer spec cars, certainly the one i drove was. What rpm is it doing at say 50 or 70 mph?

There is a guide in maintenance that also describes the best oil, which by the way, stinks to high heaven, even when new.

Easy to do just follow the maintenance guide on page five. Took 1-2 hours. could not get hold of the oil he used so went to the local motor factors and got some SAE90 for LS diffs you need just over a ltr and thats why I'm going back under the car on Sunday to put the last 100ml or so in. the other two things i got from Halfords. I think in total job cost £20 and a bit of my time getting mucky underthe car ;D ;D ;D

Ratio easy to check as for the slip don't know, as for the revs don't know without going out again I take it that would be in 5th gear will check the next time I go out. Don't want to put normal diff in as this thing is quick and I love it. ;D ;D

Vectra won't have a diff, a replacement LSD will need to be sourced from another Omega.

Bad news is best case is it will be at least 6 years old, so its gunna be shagged too.  :(

That would make going 'round corners quite... interesting  :D

(I know what you meant, though ;) the diff is just at the wrong end.. and part of the gearbox.. and completely different..  :D)

OK. So the next question is what parts have the most wear is it the crown wheel? as it is going to be had to find a new one I would think. What else would need replaceing don't seem to be any oil leaks so seals do not wear much. going back a few years I used to drive triumphs and the diffs on them had a washer that used to wear and you could renew them. has anyone had one of the vauxhall ones apart.

Looking at the book of lies the Omega LSD is a clutch type LSD, which means the primary wear part is most likely going to be the clutch plates inside the diff.. following that I'd imagine the taper bearings and then gears themselves..

(As a disclaimer, I've never actually worked on a clutch type diff; my other cars have viscous & helical diffs which, essentially, don't wear)

without stripping the diff I would not like to say. I think I am going to find another diff then start to look deeper. Thing is how do I find the correct sizes of the new parts has anyone got any tech drawings of the diff or do they have some kind of marks on the parts.

diffs are funny things everyone wants a lsd most dont know how they work just that they lock out wheel slip when a wheel starts to lose grip, That said there was a place in colwick nottingham that used to repair notts police vehicle lsd i cant remember what they a called i shall dig the info up as they repaired/overhalled a lsd on two of my police special senators resanable prices too did a swop  on 1 of them took the old one and replaced it with a recon 1
