Help with oil light please
« on: 13 August 2010, 22:10:26 »

So, I'm at a campsite (Nr Brean, Somerset) a fair way from home in Oxfordshire, and for the first time ever, the oil light comes on, and stays on.

Journey down here was fine, but 1 mile out from site this morning, on comes the light. Pulled over and checked level, plenty.  Top end starting to rattle a bit.
Nip back to site gently and call AA.  Local garage dude comes out and reckons the oil pump pickup must be blocked.  I don't have Relay cover, and I don't fancy entrusting it to a local garage, so...

I 'nipped' home on the train, coming back with loads of tools, oil, filters etc in my car.  Got a sump baffle/gasket hopefully coming in to Weston Super-Mare Vx in the morning.

Who's had the single-piece steel sump off an X20XEV, and do you really have to lift the engine off its mounts to do so?

Will I be able to get it off 'enough' without shifting the engine, to see the pickup pipe, and clear it if blocked?

What's the chances it isn't the pickup blocked, and if so what else could be the prob?

All help gratefully received.  :y  Anyone local?  ;)

Well, the rattle confirms there is an oil pressure problem so that rules out the switch. Could be a blocked pickup strainer or a stuck pressure relief valve, IMHO. Sometimes you can get at the relief valve from externally (under a plug on the oil pump casting normally). Not familiar enough with the 4 pot to offer much more advice, I'm afraid.

I am just wondering if there is any way to "Backflush the pump/pickup. Then you could just do a simple oil change. Perhaps you could tap into a sensor fitting . . .  ::)  Just thinking aloud, any thoughts?

Hi
If you are at the camp site for another week or so, then consider joining another breakdown club with recovery, not the AA or they may smell a rat.  I always take out recovery on the basis that if I cannot fix it at the side of the road then neither can a man who is not as familiar with my car as I am!!
For the same reason, I avoid the AA & RAC because they always initially send out a man with a van who looks at the car and then comes to the same conclusion as me, that it cannot be fixed at the side of the road.  There is then another hours wait before the recovery truck turns up.  Other operations send the recovery truck in the first instance.

Elite now gone.  Bought an X-Type 4x4.  If there had been an Omega 4x4 I would have bought that instead.  We really liked the Omega, but I wanted 4x4.

Guys, thanks so much for all these helpful replies, and PMs.  Will ask at Vx about the pressure-relief valve, and if they have the 'non-sticking' kit.

Should find out in a minute if Vx have the gasket I need.

Wifi on site is flaky, so apologies if I'm not on much.

Some great help already cheers, now could someone do something about this sodding rain? Ta.

^ ;D

Well someone did, 'cos it stopped about lunchtime, just after I got back from Vx in Weston with my gasket.  ;D

Anyway, good news; it lives!

The oil pressure relief valve was my first port of call after topping up to  max, and changing the filter (which was quite grotty considering it was only 2-3K since last changed).  Easy to remove, accessible without any disassembly, in fact after tapping it with a hammer a couple of times it didn't need any grunt to undo.  No fault found, reassembled and tested, no change.  :'(

So I started to undo the bits in the way of sump removal, and then the sump screws, no real grief except crud falling into the eyes/hair continually.  ::)

Once all the screws were out it was a job to break the seal, but it came away eventually without any drama.  Four screws to remove pick-up pipe and there it was, strainer full of crud.  I've got a pic or two which I'll post if I can.

Didn't get sump right off, didn't need to, and didn't use the £40  :o baffle/gasket, as the old one seemed fine.  I'll do it all properly at home sometime v. soon.

Good clear out of pick-up strainer, reassembly of everything, filled up with oil and start.  No oil light!  :y

Still a bit tappy, but I feel sure that will go soon, too busy drinking now to take it out for a proper spin...

Thanks again for the fantastic support, you're all lovely people.   :y
