Here's one of the pics, too much like hard work to do both, and they look much the same:

Ignore the date, my camera is lying!  ;D

Cheers fella.  Best guess, the car was serviced 'minimally' prior to our ownership.

If you think the strainer looks bad, imagine my alarm as I scooped out the best part of a handful of gritty crud from the bottom of the sump.

Anyone with spare time/energy on their hands, with a mig whose sump hasn't been off during their ownership, may wish to do something preventive... ;)

to all,
now this may or may not be relevant!! however a few years ago now we at the autobahnstormers had a spate of people complaning about low oil pressure and oil lights on at slow rpms, accompanied by noisy lifters, when sumps were removed they were loads of crud in there and indeed the pickup strainers were vastly reduced in area owing to the amount of crud held there, almost like a tar or thick grease?it usually happened around 100k mark?it was finally pinned down to extended oil changes recommended by vauxhall, (10k) when all members started doing oil changes at 5 or 6 k this fault tended to not happen, looks like the same thing is happening to the v6,s?

Years ago, we used drain the oil out of the yank cars, change the filter (£1) and put 5 litres of parfin in, quick start up, nip up to the round about and back and leave over night.

Start up next morning up to the roundabout and back, straight on the ramp and and leave to settle and cool down a bit.  Then drop the sump plug and whip the filter off about an hour or 2after the morning run and leave it to drip drain all day.

New filter on, sump plug in, fill up with oil and check levels and for leaks.

Engine was allways sweet.

Used put the parafin under the wheels for burnouts and have some fun when we were bored. ::)

Did an oil and filter change on my 2.6 today and was rather startled to find quite large lumps of crud in the bottom of the bowl I drained the sump into :(. The biggest bits only just fitted through the drain hole so I suspect that bigger bits are still lying in the sump  >:( >:(

Looking back at the service history
1st service 20687 !
2nd service 58793  :o
3rd service no idea?
4th service 77950

after that the services happen about every 10000 miles

between the 1st & 2nd services it did 38000 miles :'(

Looks like I am going to be dropping the sump very soon to shovel the crud out >:(

Safely home now, no probs on the way.  :)

Not even any sign of leaks around the gasket area, though I'll have a better look later.

Engine now super-quiet  :y.  Possibly the best I've heard it run, though it's hard to remember what something previously sounded like.

Time for some thanks.

The humour about a Tech2 being needed to alter the weather was my first chuckle during this episode.  :y

Agemo: not sure whether one could force oil back through the pump towards the strainer, possibly only by rotating the engine the wrong way whilst injecting it somewhere?  :-/  I doubt it would have shifted much of the cloggage even if possible, it took the missus's tweezers ( ;D :y) and a LOT of carb cleaner and time to clear it completely.  Then it would all still be in the sump, though I suppose some may have come out by dropping the oil.

Tapper888, pic of oil pump was very helpful, ta. Vx parts man had no idea what I was on about with the replacement relief-valve kit, unfortunately I couldn't print your pic out to show him.

Special mention to Broomies Mate for the offer of tools/attendance at the scene.  What a star!   :y

Special mention to philrich for emailing me proper Vx info about everything to do with oil pumps and sumps.  What a star!  :y

Some of you may recall me posting about Pela oil extractors recently.  I may be adjusting my views.  :-/

I wonder if the strainer was already rather clogged from poor early-years servicing, then the Pela tube tapping the bottom of the sump may have dislodged some of the carbon sediment which then got sucked up to obscure the remaining area of the strainer when running.  As I've said, there was a fair amount of flaky black crud loose in the bottom of the sump.  How much of this might have flowed out with a 'normal' oil change, I really couldn't say.  Arguably more than through the Pela pipe, as some of the chunks were quite large, bigger than the I/D of the extractor.
Also in the sump; one M6-ish-sized washer, defo not from my work; will examine and photograph soon.  :o

Against this theory is the fact that the last oil change was back in early May, and no problems between then and Friday 13th.  :-/

I'm still resolutely unsuperstitious though.  ;D

Cheers OOF, scrappage was discussed, not with you lot as allies!  :y
