more v6 rocker leaks!
« on: 14 December 2010, 23:24:33 »

Hello from a newbie! Read with intrest post yesterday on cam cover oil leaks. My recently aquired 2.5v6 dumps oil outta them as fast as i fill it.However before i follow the excellent on site info perhaps someone could offer more advice.  Both plastic covers on mine are badly warped-so bad last owner had siliconed both inside and outside around them to camoflage problem till too late!- and pointless refitting them. Im told this is common and best cure is to fit metal covers instead of plastic. Great news ..ive got some..off a vectra i believe. Bad news..not sure theyll fit. can anyone advise ?  The oil filler is in a different place-on top of cover where mine is offset to passenger side-and looks like it will be covered by plenum And which gasket set do i need .? I note you all say use gen vaux.....help please if you know about this mod.   cheers Richard in yorks. :o

If your covers are deffo warped do NOT fit metal Vec ones. Get a set of decent secondhand covers off one of the breakers here (place wanted ad in "test" section and ask admin to move).......and yes, only use genuine gaskets, "O" rings & sealant as per guide........and don`t forget the breather system

first of all you need to adress whats causing the pressure build up causing the oil to leak, the cam cover gaskets are the weakest point, so any pressure built up will be let out here first, most likely breathers are blocked, theres a guide in the maintenance section.

as for the covers, known good ones from a breaker will do, just be sure to use genuine gaskets and sealant.

there is issues with metal covers as you have found out, so its easier for future work to refit plastic ones.

good luck  :y

using metal cam covers will cause your crankseal to go should your breathers not be cleaned out/become blocked again. I'd rather do cam gaskets than crank seal

If you do wish to use the metal covers I believe that they are fitted with the oil filler on the opposite side to the plastic covers and this does result in some difficulty in replenishing the oil.  Use Vectra gaskets to match the covers.  Ensure your breathers are kept clear to avoid the problems others have noted with using the metal covers. (Have Vectra owners noted problems with the crank seals blowing out on the V6?)

Elite now gone.  Bought an X-Type 4x4.  If there had been an Omega 4x4 I would have bought that instead.  We really liked the Omega, but I wanted 4x4.

Hello
I do no yet have any leakages in my Y26SE. I never cleaned the breathers. So could you please show the link to the maintenace section or tell me where I find the breathers and how to clean them (before they will be blocked).

I have a vectra b gsi aswell as the omega mv6, I fitted metal covers to the omega in the summer this year, I did replace the breather ontop on inlet manifold with brand new, and cleaned the pipes to the breather box.  Vectra doesn't suffer with crank seal problems, not sure everyones negativity toward the vectra covers, do you really think vauxhall would spend millions on development to have inherant oil leak problems.  Omega covers Do warp, due to the plastic seeing near 100 degrees c, Ive spoken to a few vaux v6 specialists to confirm the warping, I saw it myself after removing them, and having always torqued them correctly, even though they had been removed only once before I replaced.  Vauxhall always have stock of the plastic covers, vectra c has plastic covers too, again suffering from leaks, do you honestly think that all owners of platic covers of v6 vauxhalls are incompitent at torqueing up the bolts? Vectra metal covers dont warp as their metal, also the seal is double thickness of omega.  They never fill the plugs with oil or allow oil to escape externally.  Vauxhall fitted metal covers because of the large inlet manifold so as to support it.

Oil filler ends up next to brake servo, to fill just fit the existing platic filler extension to fill.

Surely thats the same when they developed the plastic covers as well.  The problems start when people just nip the bolts up when the oil leak starts.

Thanks for the link RobG. When I open the link I see another two links how to remove the V6 plenum. When I choose the lower one - Appendum to 2.6/3.2 I see three links of which the first one http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1285584841 does not work. Actually I get a System Information: "You are not allowed to access this section." Can anyone of you open that link ?

I have seen quite a few Vectras with leaking crank seals.

Thats what gets taken out when the breathers block.

I have also seen very few warped Oemga covers, plenty with hard seals though!

I prefer the Omega covers, they fit, the plug leads fit well and if good gaskets are used they work reliably.
