CAM COVER
« on: 20 March 2011, 13:42:58 »

Hi guys.

Got a couple of questions for you which I would be very grateful if you could help me with.

I need to replace the cam cover gasket on my 2.2 CD Facelift.....and thanks to the excellent guide on this forum, i know how to do it.. :y
However just as I was about to start the job I noticed something that is concerning me.

On the right hand side of the cam cover about 1 inch down on the block, there are two empty thredded holes.
One is on the top right hand corner directly underneath the large breather tube, and the other one is halfway down the block.
Are these meant to have bolts in them, they look like they do because they are thredded on the inside.
I have'nt had my car long and it's the first Omega that I've ever had so I apologise if it's a stupid question  :-[ :-[

Second qestion....you know the dispack plug at the back of the black ecotech strip....well how do you remove it?

I've read on a guide in the maitenance section that says to " lift the arrowed release catch ".
However on my plug there is no arrow......the very centre of the plug there is a small rectangular section with a small circular pattern on it that I assume is the release catch in question.
Do you put your thumb on this and push backwards towards the back of the engine, or do you lift it upwards.

I just want do make sure that I don't snap the bloody thing thats all.

Many thanks for your time...I'm grateful for any help  :y :y

I can do it myself, I just want to know if those two holes are supposed to have bolts in and how to release the plug.
I've been searching through the forum and can't fing any pics of them on another car  :-[

Can't help you with the plug lock (2.0s not having the same arrangement), but I can say that the spare tapped holes in the head are not meant to have anything in them (99.99% sure, can't quite be bothered to look on ours, but pretty sure I've seen same unusued holes as you describe).

Edit: just got up to look, and yeah, three tapped holes the front one of which has a lifting bracket/eye screwed into it.

Had a look on tunnie's camcover guide for a pic to help with the connector, but no luck.

Did see this one, where it looks like he's about to plonk the newly-gasketted cover back on:

He spotted and removed the old o-ring sat on the right-hand rear camcap, right?  :D
 :)

Thanks Abiton.
I wanted to make sure as they just look a bit strange...I'm curious now as to what their for exactly...there must be a reason why they are there  :-?

Just need some advice now on removing the plug.
Like I said I just want to make sure I don't damage it.

Quite possibly only used when the engine is mounted transversely in FWD applications, for supporting pipework or something. Lots of engines have spare tapped holes on them, don't worry about it.  :)
