Is this mpg right 2.2 dti
« on: 01 November 2010, 00:46:43 »

Just done a 400 mile journey from Stranraer to Swindon with at least 300 on the motorway and averages 40.3 mpg. On the b roads I was cruising at about a constant 60 and about 75 on the motorway and driving very economically on both roads. I did an oil change two days earlier and cleaner the maf with engine degreaser to remove the hugh amount of oil build up.
Is this about right, I was hoping for 45+mpg.
Btw it's a 2.2 dti with only 36,000 on the clock.

Is there anything I can do to avoid the hugh crap build up in the maf and if the mpg is a bit low what can I do to improve it cause I have to drive back up to Stranraer next fri.

Thanks v much

Cleaning MAFs not usually successful - replace.

i have the 2,2dti engine and thats the mileage i get on it too even if i drive at 100km/h or 120km/h... in the city i get 22mpg or even 21 depending on the trafic. it isn't that economical but the taxes are a bit lower

I was also thinking of getting the car remapped. Partially for the extra power and partially to try and improve mpg. Does anyone know how much it should improve the mpg with similar driving

40 m.p.g isn't too bad, my old Vectra 2.0 diseasel used to manage mid thirty's, maybe mid 40's on a run if I drove REALLY carefully...

I did a 519 mile round trip in my 2.5 diesel manual Omega from Northwich to Maybole, Ayrshire to collect an Omega. I was towing a dolly up there and an Omega back and I didn't quite use a full tank of diesel. I will admit I didn't get over 60mph though ;)

My running average over the last 2 years is at 40.4 mpg (2.2 DTi), so I think your result is OK if not spectacular. Accuracy - I've checked once or twice and the computer seems fairly close to real life.

My best was about 55 mpg over a two leg trip Sheffield to New Forest and back with a bit of running around while there - I was cruising slower than you on the motorway to get that figure.

21 / 22 mpg sounds pretty bad Boditza!

The general consensus here is that cleaning the MAF doesn't work....however, I have now cleaned mine successfully twice, using isopropl alcohol & a small (new)paintbrush. Well worth the punt of £3 or so versus £50+? :y

I thought the same when i bought the 2.2dti estate!! luckily i bought it while in uk to use and the old 2.5 was in spain, was going to drive it out and let the old girl rest here, after a thousand miles in the 2.2 realised it just was not as good as the 2.5 in anyway shape or form, left it in england and sold it!!
still got the 2.5 estate!!! :y

22mpg is about 10,5 liters per 100km and the owners manual says that in urban traffiic is 9,8 liters so i really don't think is bad. besides it depends on everyones knowledge of trafic. i see trafic every day moving 100meters in 5 minutes and then w8ing another 2 at the stop light :). i am curious what is your mpg in a crowded city like london for example at rush hour

Fair question, hard to say because I try my hardest to avoid spending time driving in London or other cities!
So I don't really have a comparison figure for you - just 22mpg sounded pretty horrific vs what I see, even though the type of driving is very different.

thats what i am trying to say... besides i never got 40mpg on it. maybe if i drive at 80km/h in 5th but that means that the engine has ~1600rpm and its not that good for the turbine or for the engine for that matter because at 80km/h the wind resistance is strong and at that low rpm the engine doesn't have enough power. i always try to keep it over 2000rpm and don't let smudge build up on the turbo pallets.

If my calculations are correct 22mpg is around 12,89 litres per 100 km so I definitely wouldn't call this a go fugure Boditza. This is way too much for a diesel in any case.
Just to stress once more(if my calculations are correct).
