Deep Joy with my CID
« on: 25 August 2011, 19:48:45 »

I have  been very wary of posting this . . what with Sods Law etc. but it has been a week now so hopefully the fault is cured.

Some of you may remember that over the past few months I have posted several questions & asked for advice on my CID screen playing up , showing a mass of greyish lines.

A sharp tap in the screen area would usually correct it.

It always seemed to me that it was more of a loose connection somewhere than  a problem in the screen itself.

My first attempt at getting to the back of the screen was a fair success, as i found the 12 pin connector for the maps was not plugged in. however, I could not manage to get the clocks panel right  out to see clearly how the 2 connector blocks were located.

Last week i had a second attempt at removing the clocks panel, this time with more success.

I found that the locking clips on both the main & 12 pin blocks on the CID were not  locked in place , meaning the connection were not located properly or tightly. Also of the 4 clips that hold the CID in place only 2 were located & the whole thing was lop sided.

Having been able to lock the connections  in place before the panel was put back into position is a much better option & I am sure that is how you should do it.

In the week since this was done & 150 ish miles later the screen has not yet faulted once . It would usually fault out several times even on a short trip & more so on bumpy roads.

So fingers crossed . .  it may be that it was a loose connection all
along.

I'll keep you posted on how it goes . . . ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

Sorry to spoil the fun, but I know exactly what causes that issue, and you haven't fixed it.  But by man-handling the screen, given it a temporary reprive.

The answer is a new LCD panel  :'(

If you're really lucky, a few days.  I suspect when it goes again, the belting of the dash won't be that successful, as before.

You all have discribed what happened to mine, the cure is stick the new garmin in front of the CID,  use the petrol gauge, look at your watch and listen to radio 2 all the time.  How much are new CID's now ? 8-) 8-)

The flexi circuit connectors on the LCD panel get brittle joints, a good dose of reflowing of the solder appears to cure all very well (did it on mine and 12 months later all still good)

thanks for the info that yours has lasted a year so far . .  :y :y

any pictures available of exactly what has to be re soldered. Looked at the pics in TB's   CID screen replacement in the maintenance guide, but not sure what the "flexi circuit connectors" are :-[ :-[

Screen is still good at the moment - but it has only been 10 days since I got the connections into the back of the screen properly.

TB says it' could be only a matter of a few days before it goes wrong again, If it does any kind of attemped repair must be worth a try first :-/ :-/

The connectors in question are within the LCD panel itself and are very fine pitch, I used a microscope and reflow kit plus rework flux to touch them all up.
