« on: 20 October 2011, 23:05:33 »

What to replace the Omega with is the never ending question, I did not want a BMW felt that a Merc, and I would add Jag, is to ostentatious, from a work point of view so I went way of track and bought a Jeep.... :y :y

I chose the Phaeton V6 diesel - 4 wheel drive, weighs best part of 2.5 tonnes, road tax £435 is downside, insurance £300 though, motorway mpg 37. Do not use around town - (or any diesel for that matter - DPF as per watchdog)

I found the XJ cabin to be small though - seems much less room in it than the Omega barge - us bigger chaps are a bit squeezed in the drivers seat as well

Ford have long since sold Jag to Indian conglomerate, Tata (also own Tetley Tea, hence my interest ;D)

The X type (mondeo) and S type from that era are pretty unreliable, and poorly designed. But the S type does have that V8 ::)

.. and a nice V8 it is. :-*

First ride behind that engine was with a colleague in Munich who had an XJ8 with one of those in. I thought it was a V12 at first. :-*

A mate of mine had the 3.0 S type. Whilst it was probably a little quicker than the Omega it felt a lot more cramped inside and a bit more wallowy on the bends. I recall his ownership of it (from new - silly sod) wasn't without the odd niggle either. It's also a marmite car. Personally, I reckon if you want a car that looks old-fashioned you should buy the proper 60's S type. ;)
