Well, the bonnet seems to have taken a smack after taking a good look at it today, also the bumper is slightly damaged, so I obviously need to try and get it sorted, however, it runs well, taken it out for a good long drive today and it's sweet as, lowish miles so would expect it to be. Apart from the wheels needing to be balanced and, one tyre needs to be removed as it's a fullrun :o :o everything is all good :). Fixed the door blind today, it had simply come off of the runners  :y

Mark, how does it work?

Guess work basicaly.

The oil level is monitored via a sensor hence some units dont even have a dipstick with the recommended way of top up being to drain the oil and measure the correct amount back in so as to avoid over filling.

The ECU has a standard oil life figure programmed in and reduces the oil life based mainly on fuel consumption as its inferred that this is related to engine load......and it does this by subtracting 1000 off the life value as set points are reached.

They also have a sensor which detects oil resistance (a pretty poor way of determining oil life)

So they MUST use the correct BMW oil or all bets are off.

The level sensors are known to be problematic with disasterous effects (over filling being the most common!).

Oil life is not adjusted as engines wear and the likes of blow by gases increase.

So to be quite honest, its a gimmick not worth placing any reliance on.

Only a German development department could make a daft recommendation like that. ::)

Agreed, some of the later Mercs are the same although you can access the oil level from the dash display.
