Was going to say I had a pleasant week sitting by a pool in Florida in February. Budget might be an issue, I suppose?

We could probably stretch to it if we were really careful up until then - but... I've never been to USA before, I'd probably want more than a week, for my first time...  :-\

Yes. Either that or you'll be desperate to go home by then. ;D

Canaries / Tenerife, is in my opinion a complete & utter shit hole. Imagine Blackpool, but with heat.

I'd vote South Portgual, I hired a Villa there in the summer from these people:

Maybe you might get a discount with similar name?  ;D

Personally in January I hope to go snowboarding in French Alps  :D

Hi James,

Canaries - nice & hot, very hilly, beaches ok, good for scuba diving

Cyprus - nice & hot, good beaches & night life

Tunisia - ok and hot, beaches 50/50 & the town centres full of locals hounding you

Southern Italy - nice & hot, fairly cheap unless you goto Rome or Naples, then a bit pricey

Spain, Costa Brava - nice & hot, fairly cheap very relaxing but has a night life too

Afghanistan, nice & hot, locals not too friendly and watch out for pot holes in the road!!  ::)

Not where the TB family tend to go ;).  Used to do an annual pilgrimage to Ayia Napa, but the brits there were a bloody embarrassment.

Went all over it, stayed near Playas America's - Hired a car drove all around the island, just one dump after another. Last minute choice by a mate, only time in about 12 years we went package, never again.

Plenty of other much nicer places to visit!

Depends on what you want.  Not been to Canaries for years (like 20+ ;D), but you'll always be able to find something quiet, something lively, whatever most people want to be honest. And guaranteed sun.

The Canaries, like Ibiza, Ayia Napa etc is ruined by, I'm afraid to say, the brits  :-[

I'll agree, Tenerife or one of the other Canary Islands is not a bad choice for a short haul destination. Went there a few years ago at the beginning of January and weather was great - was around the high 70's to 80F most of the time. Can't beat it when it's freezing your nut off in Blighty! ;)

Sadly that is true for most of the popular holiday destinations :'(

We had a really nice Christmas Break to Tunisia a few years ago, but if you get uptight with being pounced on in the markets/towns then don't go ;) They always expect you to barter and the best currency (as long as you're discrete) is half bottles of whisky ::)

We would certainly go back again in the future but as TB says, the place was slightly ruined by the Brits :-[

all inclusive good idea.. because those hotels are not cheap..

there are daily boat tours , that you may enjoy, but ask the details before..   also fethiye ,kaş is nearby.. so you can hire a car (and if you hire a car really check it in detail before you sign!!)  or better enter a tour going there .. nearly 3 hours (approx 180-200 km) but the roads are not bad and scenery is nice.. and on the road you can stop at restaurants that cook blue crab..

ps: if you buy something or eat outside ask the price before!! especially for fish..

pps: nights will be cold , so be prepared .. and dont drink anything before checking the bottle!!!!.. beers are ok, but there are fake strong drinks that may well be very harmfull..  :(  (better buy from supermarkets)

Someone mentioned Morocco. I went to Tangiers and Marrakech a few years ago when I went backpacking for a few months. Although I got a really cool ''djellaba'' which is their traditional dress (a hooded version of what the ''Scream'' guy wears  ;D) the place is an absolute shiiiiiiit hole!!!!

At the time it was quickly developing in to a tourist destination but if you don't mind being stared at for being white and can cope with the putrid smell that seemed to be all around, presumably from a poor sewage system, then go for it. but not for me!!!!

As for the Greek Islands... I always enjoy doing these cos I like driving and hiring a car and going all around the island. I'd definitelt recommend Zante, although avoid the big sexual disease that is Laganas.

However, as the OP is going in January would obviously need to check the weather.
