New 'stat required
« on: 30 December 2011, 12:09:50 »

My Omega doesn't normally get much day to day use, but it has been over the last couple of weeks. On my way to work yesterday, after about 10 miles of stop start driving I noticed that the engine temp had managed to reach a heady 90oC - normall sits at 95 ie halfway round the gauge. I tried to get the temp up by dring it a bit harder on the lanes nearer work but could only get it to go up another couple of degrees and even then the gauge went back down again as I actually got to work.
New thermostat ordered yesterday.

Over the last couple of weeks mine has struggled to get past 85 on temp gauge.   :(. It won't be getting touched until the fairer weather. I've got a garage on the side of my house but it is full of the usual bits and bobs and a motorbike so I can't get in it to work on the car.  :( ::)

V6 stats tend, with age, to start sticking slightly open, causing cool running on a cruise, that goes up to normal temp (midpoint, so 95C for prefacelifts, 90C for facelifts).

Replacement, as you suspected, is the cure.  Not too bad a job, but a bit fiddly the first time you do one.

It's not done bad. I've not changed it in 8 yrs/80k miles so suspect it's the original  ;) ;)

So I believe, but when I helped Ian_D with his head gasket I looked at his 'stat (the 1st time I've seen one) and although I only gave it a quick coat of looking at (cos it had to go back into Ian's car) I couldn't see how the actually working bit came out of the housing.  :-\
