really? what ratio?

does it work ok? not smoke too much?

1 its easy identified by the authorities.

2 thicker somewhat than diesel (needs heating)

3 oil filters filter to a lower level than a fuel filter. (metal particles)

4 less than 20% ratio

5 ?? hdi engine

what's hdi? I thought it was just the pegeot/renault/citroen whatever version of turbo diesel? Although from reading various stuff I get the impression that these engines are more primitive than modern turbo diesels so can take any sort of crap as fuel. i don't know the difference in the engines bewteen tdi and dti and all that. i know what commomn rail is though.

Surely it's not illegal though is is? Why would the authorities give a crap? If you can do so many thouand litres of veg oil is this not ok? Probably not now all the robots are trying to assimilate us.

your right,  the 2.2 tdi is not (h)igh pressure/ common rail engine so more forgiving.

the veg oil concession was to keep the greenys happy. burning fossil is not quite the same.

Put simply .. your old oil is contaminated with various carp, and is well past its best .. which is why you have changed it.

Burning it in your engine is .. to put it simply again....  HIGHLY POLLUTING 

No matter what ratio you dilute it to, you are sending all the contaminants into the atmosphere .. which is basically .. not good ..

I'm sure many of us have a bottle of old oil kicking around in the garage waiting to go to the tip. 

I've found it to be a very good alternative to creosote for garden fences and gates etc, but I also use it to polish light scrapes and scratchs on plastic bumpers and trim and it's alot cheaper and just as effective as 'Back to Black'!! 

What other things do you lot use your old oil for?? 

 
........and weedkiller. Provided you do not need the soil to grow plants....

Whatever will fit in on top of the diesel.. so it's only 5L of oil on an almost full tank of diesel. Runs fine, then again his car seems to run fine on anything; candela oil (that stuff you put in garden lanterns), meths, white spirits, veg oil, have all gone in there in varying proportions over the last ~60k.

The only thing it took offence too, apparently, was ~10L of four star (yep, proper old fashioned leaded four star) in a tank of diesel..

Diseasel next for me i think. Could I run a Vauxhall/isuzu whatever it is 1.7td engine on a mix of crappy old oil?

I put vodka in the tank of a suzuki 125 years ago.Just leaving for work (only a mile or so away) and the bloody thing ran out.
No petrol on the premises,so tipped a cupful of voddy in the tank to get me there. What a waste.
It didnt run very well on it either,maybe Saki would have been better.

when i was doing recovery one of lads ran his car on anything he could find, mainly the fuel drains we did from where people put petrol in diesel and visa versa and all the old oil from when trucks serviced, smoked like a trooper from cold but cost him nothing to run fair play to him but wouldnt do to any of mine

I do not understand peeps who let their tank run dry, I am forever telling swmbo not to let the tank get so low, to never get below half full................

was working an 80 hour week at the time,never seemed to find time to do the normal things like putting petrol in etc. No fuel gauge either,so it was down to guesswork.

My bosses ran their new '05 Mustang and Ram on fuel drains for 6 months until both cars started to run really badly. His 'solution' was to buy a code reader and reset the MIL  every week or so. When her Mustang finally wouldn't start, it had to have ALL of the O2 sensors replaced at a cost of more than than any fuel saved. Apparently the Ram was even more expensive.

I wouldn't dream of using dirty fuel in anything modern, but my '72 Avenger however runs fine on anything that isn't more than 30% diesel. It's also done 30,000 miles that I know of on unleaded fuel(or a mix of that and reclaimed fuel) with no signs of valveseat recession.

Yep... Any of the older engines will run fine on a mixed fuel but, like you, I wouldn't dream of putting it into anything modern. The cost of replacing lambda's and cats would make it a flase economy plus the modern engine electrics are too fussy

That's interesting, I'm treating all my fence boards and posts in used engine oil in wheely bins. I thought about using it as creosote to apply with a brush. Does it work ok like that, you seem to be quite knowledgeable in old oil uses!

I was going to get some of that tarmac reviver stuff that you put on with a roller. It basically just colours it and improves the appearance, but someone said I can use old oil instead. Not sure about this though, I think it won't dry aswell and still be a bit slippy.

I've heard of people filtering it and using it as 'black' diesel.

It works quite well brushed on Geoff, although it does take longer to dry.  I did a couple of back gates recently that hadn't been treated for ages and had bleached to a light grey colour.  They probable took 3 or 4 days to dry, but dried to a nice chestnut colour!!
