Buying Advice, 2.2 vs 2.6 v6
« on: 20 January 2012, 17:50:02 »

Hi Everyone,

Having sold my V6 last year I'm now looking at purchasing another of my fav car.

I'm looking for some expert buying advice from you helpful bunch.

Looking ahead at insurance and running costs, including mechanical reliabilty , I'm torn between as to which Omega to buy, the 2.2 or the 2.6 v6?

I love the power and sound of the V6 but is the 2.2 more economical to run and are there any major things to look into, i.e Cambelt?, headgasket, ??

Hope I'm making sense? lol...

Cheers as always

Paul

Look out for proof of cambelt on any you choose!  :y

Never driven a 2.2 but there's definitely some interesting views on here for 4 pot vs 6 pot. I'm sure someone will be along shortly to start the argument advise  :-X :y

Tiny difference in running costs, the V6 is a bit more powerful too. Personally I'd get a 2.6, however a 2.2 manual can be pretty nippy when needed to be.

Yes, I think you'd feel a tad inadequate on the forum if you didn't get a V6  :-X :-X :-X ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

ive a 2.2 petrol auto, find it ok for what i need ,however,on a trip to wales last year, with 3 passengers plus a boot full of luggage, and a tank of fuel,i did wish ide bought a v6,as it did struggle at times.check for the exhaust manifold on the 2.2,as they do warp, which leads to all sorts of fault codes being given.fuel economy is slightly better on the 2.2,but all depends how heavy your foot is.. :)

I dont think maintenance and fuel costs will make a huge difference on that heavy car..except insurance.. my preference would be V6.. and if economy is primary concern there are other things to look.. :-\

Have had both. First was a 6 pot (2.6 manual) last 2 have been 4 pot (2.2's manual and now auto). All Estates

IMO, and I am SURE I will be contradicted on here, I have had a lot less trouble with the 4 pots over the same time period of owning each one.

2.2's can be claimed to be underpowered and less MPG but having never run any of the bigger 6 pot I have found the 2.2's to be the same as the 2.6 if not a little better.

The Manual's were obviously slightly better on MPG and performance than the auto but in todays town traffic, and cruising, I have preferred the auto.

My reading of the posts on here is that the usual problems, cam belts & cover gaskets, sensors, head gaskets, etc.... occur on both 4 pots & 6 pots. Up to you to decide which you would be willing to work on yourself.

I have an Omega because I like the Omega, for it's comfort and more importanly to me it's size. Do not know what I am going to do when I can no longer get one.

I am not an expert as such just letting you know what I have found.

Hope this helps
Phil
