Sazzaa, hello and welcome.

First of all, sack your mechanic. ''Run it for 200 miles and see what happens''??? WTF?

I am no mechanic, but a loss of power and acceleration... misfire perhaps???

If I were you I'd enlist the services of one of the legends on here to diagnose and repair!

Just my opinion! :)

Ha, I can't blame the mechanic fully, I think he was trying to save me paying a huge bill all at once!   (I'd mentioned I didn't have more than a couple hundred to spare at the moment and am heading on holiday in 2 weeks...)

Fair enough but I'd expect a diagnosis!

As I said get someone on here to do it. Expert advice!  :y

Ok, done the paperclip test.....  Comes up with 73 and 31.  So thats Mass Airflow Sensor Voltage Low and No Engine RPM Signal, right?
no signal is cos engine not running, mass airflow sensor is on the air intake black round bit with square top check the plug is clean. inside and outter.if is do test again without it pluged in.

Erm, I don't know what I'm unplugging, or which bit the air intake is....  Pics would help!

Front of engine bay, drivers side. The electrical plug you need to unplug is the one with yellow tape on it in the photo.
If the car runs quite a lot better with this unplugged, then it would be advisable to replace the part its plugged into. Its attached with a couple of large jubilee clips so if you need to replace it the only tool you should need is a flat blade screwdriver. :y

Pic is a huge help, thanks!  But I've just tried to remove the plug and it's not budging at all...

Make sure you push the securing clip in all the way.  It should come out relatively easily once this is done.  :y

Finally got the thing unplugged, the car runs a little better without it plugged in but it's not a massively noticeable difference...  Still doesn't have power but the gears seem to be less confused (feels like gears just don't want to change when it's plugged in), car is smelling of burning a bit every time I drive it and idling is still low and pretty rough.
