TID to MID upgrade
« on: 26 February 2012, 17:39:23 »

I'm currently in the middle of doing a TID to MID upgrade.
I have followed this guide: http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=97670.0 And also used this one http://www.vvoc.com/forum/showthread.php?t=365254

I'm now stuck on a few things.

1) Where is pin 3 for the ECU in the engine bay? Is it on the N/S next to the batter in the black box?

2) I can not get the screen to change from saying "check coolant" "Check brake light" etc even though i have grounded the wires.

2A) The trip stalk has 5 wires. two are in use from old leaving 3 new ones, which ones do i wire up?

Right...

1. Pin 3 on the ecu is on the lower plug on the ECU as you lift it out of the fuse box. Bottom row, third pin from the front of the car. There is no wire at that pin, so you'll either need to fit one or locate this ecu plug from the car that the MID came from, with some loom, and add the missing socket to your plug.

2. Mine still tells me to check headlight/taillights and oil level because they're not connected. You'll need to wire them through a resistor before grounding them.
Not sure of the resistance needed, as it's not my strong point.

Better still why not connect up the ones that you can, it makes all the effort much more worth while. ::) new/second hand coolant bottle(sensor is built in) and a float switch for the washer bottle (rubber blank out, float switch in) and some loom with plugs :y

2A. brown goes to earth, red and white go to the plug on the MID.

This exercise does require making new bits of loom/running wires around the dash and through the bulkhead, sadly not quite as plug and play as it could be :-\

Thats great, Thanks Taxi al.
I managed to get the yellow loom stripped and swapped over to the grey loom yesterday. Also managed to wire up part of the stalk and get the wire ran from the engine bay to the back of the MID  :y

I'm now going to earth the last wire on the stalk and connect up to the correct ECU pin. I'll let you know how i get on  :y

Update

Managed to get the stalk working  :y
Range comes up as does temp, Not took it for a drive yet though so not sure about miles etc  :-\

Ecu pin 3 however does not exist on my loom, there is no wire to it  :'(
Is it not possible to tap into a wire on the other side of the ECU where all the information goes in? If not, is there not any other way around this?  ???

Thanks for your help, much appreciated!  :)

Sadly no easy way round it :-\ I modified one of the wires left over from swapping the plugs about, but easier to use a wire/socket from a dead ecu plug. A trip to the local breakers or post a 'wanted' from one of the breakers on here. :y

The ECU plugs come apart as easily as the MID/TID ones. Just take your time and be gentle with them :y

Trip computer ie actual range/consumption/fuel used etc won't work until that wire is connected to the ecu :'( Drive it any distance and the range will go up to 999.9 ::)

Ok, I take it to fit the extra wire to the ecu then i need to make a hole where pin 3 should be and add my wire?
Am i also right in saying that to strip the plug down i need to move that blue clip in the middle?

Thanks for your help taxi al  :y

Before attacking the ECU plug, double check with TheBoy or Mark DTM which pin you need and its' location. :y

I've just clocked the fact that your car is a 2.2 :-[ The guide as I've written it is for the DBW V6, other engines might have different pin locations on the ECU :-\

The wire at the MID end is correct, but PLEASE double check the correct pin at the ECU end first.

If you've a Haynes Manual, the 2.2 has alot in common with the 2.0 16v, so the wiring diagram for the later models 2.0 16v could well apply, but please double check before pulling the plug apart.

Apologies if any confusion caused, but better safe than sorry :-[

If all checks out, the plug comes apart as you've suggested :y.

Thanks taxi al. Good job its raining today or i would have been at it  ;D
I do not have a haynes manual but it seems like it will be a good investment!

Having trawled the Internet to try and find if i could pick up a point from the engine loom i came across this reference for the fuel pin:

Z22XE         Simtec      X84/20
Y26(32)SE         Motronic      X86/3
Y22DTH         Diesel      X80/29
Y25DT         Diesel CR      X73/16
Wire color, if it is installed it is brown.

So it looks like it would be pin 20 on mine, however this also does not exist  :'(

At least you read the post first ::) That looks promising, but worth checking with TB or someone equally knowledgeable just to double check precisely which Pin you need to connect to, and on which plug :y

Should be in the Body Loom/ECU plug which is the lower of the two on the V6, (and should also apply to the 2.2). Just bear in mind that people throughout time have screwed up alot more by assuming alot less :y

Ok, Just to add to this, my MPG or as it shows litres per gallon it never seems to move of 7.1 when i'm driving along?
It will sometimes go up to 999.9 when my foot is off the accelerator.
Also with this, after my 30 mile trip to work the range went from 400 miles to 85 left and i have over 1/2 a tank of fuel  :'(

Guess the MID isn't from a 2.2 then ;D

Press and hold both buttons on wiper stalk for 3s, and post up results.
