I remember an interesting chat I had with an elderly couple once, the wife was proud to tell me that they were going to Germany that year on holiday. It was the first time for her, but said that her husband had already been there before. At which point the husband interrupted and said, "Yes, last time I was there, I was shooting the b@stards"

I think we British are right to expect a home side (in this case England) to give a good showing in European or for that matter world cup ) football.

Football in Britain is a very very well paid occupation, nay Industry. True there are other countries with as well paid leagues. Spain and Italy for example. So it is fair that our expectation is for a good team and that we put in a good showing.. Maybe we did all that was expected and have to expect to be beaten by Italy, Spain and Germany. For me that isn't good enough. They are similar sized countries and don't have a vastly larger pool of people to become talented players. Maybe we are trying to field too many home sides. Perhaps we ought to just have a Great Britain team.............. Come on Britain lets show em in the World Cup.

Absolutely no way. I personally don't consider myself British. I'm English and would hate to think I'm cheering on Welsh or even worse SCOTTISH players. Nar way

Yeah, the old cliches do get a tad boring, don't they?  Especially whilst living in Germany and getting a view on how they feel about things in history. Which I believe would be quite suprisng to most.
