Is there more than one A303? I only ask as the one I've used for the last 20 years seems like a decent bit of road that goes directly towards the destination requested. And I've rarely been a decent distance along the M4 without being held up, which the extra 70miles don't help.

Methinks there must be, as the one I drive quite often bears little resemblance to the one described by others ....

I'm sure the a303 in front of you will be completely empty Mr Entwood.

...and the caravan behind completely obscure the large queue of irritated motorists behind. ;)

Why on earth you'd use the 303 from Swindon though...?

Quite often have to go to Yeovil .. preferred route is Bassett/Westbury/Warminster/A303  a good  45 miles less than the route the Sat Nav suggests M4/M5/A39 and even with the tin-tent on I still average 60 mph ....  :)

Either arrived at lunch time and now firmly ensconsed in the pub, or got as far as Brissol and forgot to turn left, and currently looking for a B and B in Mumbles ;D

Yippee, I got to Looe. :y

Thanks for all the advice. :y

In the end, seeing how the cruise control is fixed, I decided on M4/M5. :o

The moving was a total nightmare. The removal men turned up with a Luton van so I ended up trying to cram the car full of stuff, together with my housemate and 5 animals. I ended up having to leave lots of my things. :'(

Then, when the van was fully loaded, the head removal guy tried to blackmail me into giving him cash for the removal, even though Croydon council had already told them that they were paying as part of a downsizing grant. This agreement took weeks to arrange and they had agreed to it. The blackmailing went on for about an hour with my housemate crying her eyes out. >:(

The drive down was a nightmare as my housemate ended up with the two dogs on her knee due to the lack of space in the car. Then, about half way, the ABS and TC came on. ::)

When we finally arrived the head removal guy told me that I would have to help with the unpacking. This meant that me and my housemate had to do 50 per cent of the unloading. I tried my best but I thought I was going to have a heart attack due to my ongoing health problems. Me being massively overweight with hashimoto's thyroiditis, diabetes and back problems made me feel like I was going to die. :o

Ok, I'm a bit late to this party, but this is my manor you're all talking about  >:(

A303 is a bloody ridiculous road. Roundabouts every 1/2 mile.

Ehh?? There are precicely 5 roundabouts between the M25/M3 junction and Exeter. Amesbury, Stonehenge, Sparkford, Podimore and South Petherton.

There's another option following the m3 all the way down to Sputhampton and turn right through the new forest, but I've never been that way and google maps says its half hour longer than the 303.

Half an hour my arris. If the roads are busy enough to get delayed on the A303 then the A31/35 past Bournemouth and Dorchester will be chokka.

In general, the A303 has been a problem both ways at Stonehenge since they "improved" the stonehenge roundabout. Be prepared for delays at busy times, which means sunday evening & weekday mornings eastbound, and weekday evenings westbound. The ends of the dual carrageway sections at Amesbury westbound and Winterbourne stoke eastbound can be a nightmare at very busy times too. There are local roads know only to locals to avoid these jams, <league of gentlemen voice on>but these are secret local roads for local's only<league of gentlemen voice off> ;)

On a Saturday or Sunday morning I would use the A303 every time - it won't be busy enough to be delayed. I detest the M5 south of Bristol. The local rozzers are always closeing it for no good reason, and they WILL let you sit there for 6-8 hours whilst they investigate.

7 roundabouts! You missed out Ilminster and The Cartgate, but still hardly the road to hell as it's depicted by some!  ::)  ;D

You're quite right about the New Forest route or what I call 'The Bottom Route' which if the A303 is going to be busy then that way will be worse.  ::)  The 70 odd miles between Ringwood and Honiton is mostly single carriageway and has more roundabouts than the whole of the A303!!  :o

It is a good alternative if there's an incident blocking the A303 however and there are cracking views over Lyme Bay heading west over Askerswell between Dorchester and Bridport!  :)

Yes 7 roundabouts. And having checked, even google earth shows horrendous traffic in their approach, and there's almost more single carriageway than dual carriageway. Why on EARTH would anyone choose single carriageway over three lanes of motorway. A34 is the same IMO, as far a dual carriageway goes. Hopeless.

If you've got time to admire the view while driving, well.... ::)
