This makes sobering reading and is documented on the invoice as a 'small service' to include a complimentary visual health check.

That to help soften the blow of the bill  :-\
Although 180 notes is nothing to some but if you dont know anyone who can help out with diy servicing they have no choice  :(

The complimentary visual health check takes the form of a 'spotty yoof' leaning against the car for ten minutes whilst scratching his balls. He then puts a tick in the appropriate box. Job done.

£180 for an oil change simply can't be justified.

Outrageous cost. But then again that's standard dealer stuff.

I bet it would be a similar cost if I took 3.2 to a dealer, I'd save £150 doing DIY change on the 3.2, that's a shit load of fuel. Give it's current miles, that's about 2 months worth of fuel!

Sobering thoughts, as any replacement motor for me would likely mean no more DIY.

I don't understand why anyone would use a dealer unless it's a job that requires a dealer. Overpriced and under trained.

How come? Other than the Dervs produced in the last couple of years, cars haven't gotten soo much more complicated have they?

The guides and technical knowledge here is second to none, you go to Merc/Audi/BMW/Honda forum, they are vastly less technical. Most advise appears to be take it down an indy garage who will sort it for you.

Then there is fact of working on something vastly more expensive and something very new. Not sure I'd want to change the oil on say a £10k Merc CLS 320 or Jag XJ TDVi, incase of making mistakes. Then of course you need to find someone who can reset service indicators too...

Least if I c0ck it up on current pair of cars, they are worth peanuts so don't really matter.

An element of the service cost on a premium car is to update the software on various ecus... updating the sat nav for example isn't simply about adding a few road names, but rather updating all the POI info...  ;)

I hadn't appreciated that, although I suspect it will change as they age. A good example of this is the L322 Range Rover, initially a £70k plus car, so next to no DIY I would imagine, but now they start at £5-10k and servicing/work can cost thousands, the DIY info on forums is getting better and better.  ;D

Look at it this way, 10-15yrs ago, you wouldn't have contemplated changing the oil on a pair of £25k omegas, but now, its not an issue.  :y

Off topic, but yes. She wanted a 1.6 saloon/coupe, not the gutless 1.4's which seem to proliferate these days. It had to have built in sat nav as she often uses it.
We worked out that we would have to trade hers in and add about £6-7000 to get anything half decent. Rather pointless when hers is running fine, no electrical gremlins (which I'm told French cars occasionally suffer from) and has never needed more than servicing and tyres in the five years she has had it.

I agree.

That means you now have £6-7000 spare.

May I have it please? :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

I had a main dealer bill for my Omega for around £700-£800 shortly before I purchased it (can't remember on what). A week later, the chap had a HBV fitted for around £180. There was a note scribbled on the first bill saying something along the lines of "customer came in last week spent lots of money and now car has water leak".

Did they care? Still fleeced the poor guy.
