I had just started to travel to the specialist Vx scrap yard a few miles from me this morning to investigate the possibility of acquiring a few spare parts, including a chiller glove compartment (just out of pure interest) as per my other thread, when suddenly a "Coolant Level" warning came up on the MID.

Went under the bonnet and was not surprised to see water dripping at some rate from the back of the engine and, yes you've guessed it, my HBV has split!

No scrappy visit today then, but first I have made a phone call to the dealer who sold the car (great in every other way) to get this fixed under warranty.  However if that don't work (my warranty's being checked) I will say to hell with it, ordering a genuine Vx HBV from my local stealers and carrying out my first work on this miggy.  Only had it 3 months and now this!  Bloody cars, but I still love my miggy really and any excuse to start working on this car!! ;)

Just rotten luck I suppose ::) ::), but at least it's not valve failure as I once had within two days of buying a car, and even more ghastly within one day of collecting a brand new Ford Cortina!   That was a coolant problem; some Dagenham wally had not cleared the swarf from inside the thermostate housing, and when I removed it I found it to be almost completly blocked! :o :o  

Now for some fun!! ;D :y

Ah well - it was bound to go sooner or later.  Better when you're not too far from base. :y

Biggest problem I had was getting the wipers off, thereafter straightforward although access is a pain..

Yes it was lucky from that point of view, and as for doing the job I understand what you mean about the wipers and access!  Why do designers do that to us? ::) ::)

I find undoing the nuts on the wiper arms, then hitting the arm does the trick easily :y

If you carnt get it done under warranty Lizzie, its not too bad, about £30 ish iirc from the stealers.

I guess from previous replies it must be best on a V6 to change them from above......my hbv was changed from underneath.......tho it was dangling 6ft up in the air and only took about 10mins.

Thanks Taxi Driver!  I have already decided on following the excellent HBV replacement guide on this site which is from above as I do not have a garage ramp.  As far as I can see I can do no better than that.  :y :y  And I have a TC!

If I can avoid it nowadays I tend to avoid working underneath the car if at all possible, which it wasn't two years ago when I had to replace a full set of brake pipes on a Toyota.  It horrifyingly reminded me of when I was younger always seemingly crawling around, often in the dark, under cars, and steam engines, getting covered in crud! Yuk!  :P :P

TD - I suspect it is mounted lower down on the 4 pots - I did my 2L from underneath too.

Lizzie - I invested in a Sealey heavy duty wiper puller which did the job if a jiff, having spent best part of a weeks worth of evenings waggling the wiper stalk.

Bit fiddly on v6, but scuttle off, and its doable.  Expect the usual cuts and bruises and scrapped knuckles ;D

I'd consider a 'Tunnie' on the V6, but he's bloody useless at those spring clip thingies ;D
