BMW Test Ride Day
« on: 04 September 2009, 18:00:21 »

I had today booked of as mother and father tunnie were away, so i thought i would treat myself too!

I saw a BMW GS 1150 in town, from a local garage, but they wanted £20 for a half hour test ride  :o

So i rang up BMW Oxford and asked about a test ride, and how long they would be. Answer was fine & how does 4 hours sound?  :D

I borrowed a standard BMW GS 1200 for 2 hours and a BMW GS-Adventure 1200 for 2 hours as well.

I am sold!!! I soooo want one  :D

Taking the GS out first, it felt heavy and cumbersome just moving it around the dealer, but within 5 minutes on the road i was hooked, it silky smooth to ride. Bags of torque, very, very, VERY comfy.

In the lanes i found myself going faster than i did on my MT  :o

Its very, very well balanced, and found myself sweeping around the corners with ease, and speed!! Looked down at one point and i was doing 75, when usually i would do 60 ish on the MT.

Its deceptively fast, you don't have to try, its just so manageable and found myself flying through the twisties really enjoying it.

I felt safer than i do on my MT, it has bags and bags of torque for safe over taking, and i filtering was easy!

Some pictures:

Greasy breakfast to start me off...

Standard GS

GS - Adventure, with bigger screen, tank (33L) and longer wheelbase

I don't know much about bikes, or bike dealers tbh..but charging £20 to potential customers for a 30 minute ride doesn't make much business sense to me? BMW Oxford is a pretty good garage, my uncle bought a new 525i from there and the after service was fantastic, and another family member bought a bike from there...no idea what it was. It went in for servicing or whatever and as they had no courtesy bikes available he had a 7 series for the day. I'm not a bike person, but might just buy one to get a 7 series for the day  ;D

They came across very good, and the demonstrators where in constant use.

I am going to get myself one, but early next year. :)

Early next year...mother and father tunnie are away? I'm sure trading in 3 Omega's would get you a bit closer to getting one  ;D

You were a major topic of conversation at Newent.

1) Some of use have done long trips, I have done 200 miles in a day on a 100 and have also done Gloucester to Weymouth on a 250 with a knackered alternator.

2) You need a girlfriend. ;D ;D

3) You need to move out. ;D ;D

 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Nice bikes, I've always fancied one.

Bit of a tip, don't leave your helmet on the mirror, it will fall off and hit the floor.  If it has to hit the floor at all, the first time it does, your head should be in it!

When I was 16 I used to ride from Weymouth to Durham on a Friday night and back on a Sunday, all on a Honda CB 250 K2. :)

I think the Girlfriend comment is a bit of an assumption ::) ::)  he may want a boyfriend... :D :D

Otherwise, spot on.... :y :y

I once did Assen to Peterborough in one day, about 400 miles, on a Laverda 650 Formula.  It was a very, very long day.

Tbh, I think they are the 2 most ugly bikes I have ever seen. You should have to be over 18 to be allowed to look at them. :D...........but each to their own etc.
A workmate bought one of those adventure things new a couple of years ago, iirc he paid around £10,000 for it,I told him just how pretty I didnt think it was,he got the hump and offered me a race (we had a 2 mile private circuit where we worked),He had the hump even more after that. ::) ;D

1) I like my comfort! Just look at the car i drive  ;)

2) Hummm BMW GS or a girlfriend... i'll take the bike! Even being a BMW it will be less problematic than the alternative  ;D

3) Working on that, going into contract work to help more with this. Building up a house deposit fund, taken me 18 months to get 16k so far. Still manage to squeeze in 4 holidays a year and some motorbike training  ::)

Agreed there are sexier bikes out there, but i think it looks good!

They are also deceptively fast, won't win any races but not too shabby either  :D
