right, no visible leaks from tank, fuel lines, pump, filter etc.  Maybe tiniest weep from top of injector to fuel pipe, but nothing that could explain this.

Still struggling to get 30mpg, computer reckons high 30s mpg (have been caning it ::)).

I have one theory, but guessing not finacially viable.

Is your tractor manual or auto?
The reason I'm asking is that the autos I've come across seem to struggle to get 30mpg - Markseth's was one example.
Since you chipped my manual, I'm getting a near constant 33mpg. I'm sure that Pitchfork's returns similar figures, and reckon this is realistic for a near-2 ton motor.
Financial viability aside, I go along with the injector theory here.
Just one 'dribbling' injector will play havoc with your consumption figures.

So, any ideas before it gets recycled into a washing machine?  :'(
Pitchfork's Traktor is an automatic & gets 33mpg on a run & always has, less around town obviously. When on a run It's usually pulling a lot of weight with a 5KW PA system & speakers, guitar amp, instruments, foldback monitors etc. etc.
Figures calculated over many tank refills (never believe a MID - not that I've got one anyway)

At the end of the day it's getting through more fuel than the MID says, so either it's leaking (checked) or it's injecting more fuel than it thinks, which points to a bad injector.

Would it not smoke in the second instance? (I'm asking - my only tractor experience is with small generators and they certainly chuck out some white smoke if they're not burning efficiently)

Do you still have the injectors off the old engine?

In daytime, can't see any smoke in rear view mirror.  At night, in following car's headlights, definately smoke when floored, and a big puff when it changes gear.  Not so bad you can't see car behind, but you can see smoke in passenger wing mirror (exhaust is passenger side) at road level when headlights shine on it.

Sadly, I don't have the donor's injectors - gave away to another tractor owner ages ago.

Standard (Vauxhall) chip back in. Took for drive, MID claimed I used a gallon, managed 25 miles (admittedly it was ragged most of it).  Not used enough fuel to be able to work out manually, so inconclusive currently.

The only conclusion I can draw is:
Those people who drive a non chipped TD, how do you tolerate it? It must be the slowest car I have ever owned!

Like size - speed isn't everything!
The ability to haul large, heavy loads over long distances with minimum of effort & in comfort - that's what's important :)

lololololol know what you mean!! however by your own admission you ragged it most of the way, now mine starts drinking it over 3500 rpm
but its a manual so i can keep under it through the gears, may i suggest you put a brick under the throttle pedal :o for a short while just to see if not using the revs helps??? in other words let the torque of the diesel do the job rather than driving it like a petrol??? still think its the parasitic losses of the auto doing your consumption tho!!
however on a long  motorway run where the auto lockup tc comes into play, it should be better on fuel than a manual in theory!!!
when i came down from santander to here in december i made 658 miles before i chickened out and filled it up again!!! that was at a resonably steady 75 to 85mph all the way only came out of top ear at junctions and through Madrid !!

Omegatoy's got it spot-on .....
IN THEORY - the auto-boxed evrsion should be better than a manual.
But it's purely theory, I've yet to come across an auto that's more economical generally. As he rightly states, when an auto is in 'lock-up' mode, it's the absolute optimum.

thats why i hate the damn sludge pumps!! very nice to drive but the fuel penalty just aint worth it, and when they go wrong usually have to replace the whole thing, whereas with a manual just do the clutch every 100 to 150k and thats it!! TB drove mine a few weeks ago and the second thing he said was I WANT A MANUAL :y first thing he said was hmm not used to a third pedal!! ::)

Can't deny yours went better than mine.  Terry's (formally Aidy's) old white estate with 427 ecu went like the clappers as well.

I kinda miss manuals, but still detest the Omega manual box....
