HELP PLEASE, Clutch Pedal
« on: 12 July 2009, 21:19:52 »

Hi Guys

Hope someone can give me some advice please.

Coming home tonight, pushed the pedal to the floor changed gear and the pedal stayed on the floor. :(

Had to get home by the seat of my pants. Knocking it out of gear at the lights and starting the engine up in 1st to get it rolling [smiley=shocked.gif]

Is this a new clutch? or something with the mechanism that I can free off.

The clutch is not slipping, in fact it bits pretty well. I've been told the clutches on the later models are mega buck?

It's a 2.2 DTI, 03, CDX Estate.

I need this car for work, any advice would be really appreciated.

Clutches are hydraulic, what's the fluid level like in the brake/clutch reservoir? It sounds like a leak to me .... but I have a proper gearbox!  ::)  ;)  ;)  ;)

Cheers Guys

I don't know if it's cable or hydrolic activated on the DTI.
My Bl*****y Haynes manual doesn't cover the DTI engine. >:( :(

All others are hydraulic .... have a look! ;) At the side of the brake/clutch reservoir  you'll find a pipe that goes of to the salve cylinder. Auto's have the same stub but it's blanked off.  ;)  ;) :y
I would think it'll be the same as others. If it's the salve cylinder/release bearing that's gone t1t5 up ...... then I'm sure it'll be a gearbox off job.  :'(

Do the brakes and clutch use the same fluid/reservoir?

The fluid is on min but not below, I can see a, what looks like an over flow pipe coming off the side near the top of the res' and the fluid is slightly below that?

That overflow pipe feeds your clutch master cylinder. Sounds like you have a leak somewhere. You need to bleed the clutch out which is easier from the slave end.

Cheers is that the pipe that looks more like a re-enforced plastic hose, rather than a metal pipe? It goes around the back of the brake servo into a small manifold fixed to the bulk head?

Can I use any fluid? say from the all night garage?

Thanks for the advice.

I had an issue like this a few years back, it was heat that colapsed the pipe and caused loss of presure and the pedal to stay on the floor for me. It was so long ago I cant remember the details, but might help!

Yes they do share the reservoir .... if the fluid level is level with the bottom of the pipe, I reckon you've a leak!  :(

any dot 3 brake fluid should do - but I suspect even if you have air in there it will be soggy pedal time.  more likely the slave cylinder has given up

Hi Guys

Well you've done it again :y

Been down the garage, got me some fluid, topped it up to max, dragged the clutch pedal up off the floor and pumped it. Instantly it started to operate the release.

Can't understand how the level is so low. I had a mini service not long ago. Thought they would have checked it. Also the MID usually mithers the life out of me when some basic thing is wrong. Just shows you should check things yourself. Maybe I have a leak as someone suggested :-/

The pedals a bit spongy and I'll have to bleed it to be sure.
But at least I can get to the job tomorrow.

A big thanks to all you guy's for your advice :y
