Had an 04 Plate XJR briefly a year or so ago (may have been longer), they're massive on the outside, although on the inside I didn't find it big at all, and I'm really not of an acceptable height to be commenting on size issues, however the supercharged V8 is an astonishing engine 400 BHP and ultra smooth however when I once pushed hard for a while, 7 odd MPG average wasn't good. My E60 5 series I would say was bigger inside, very comfortable and I never spent a penny on that. I'll get hated for this (as I do for anything BMW related but ho hum), the 7 Series is leaps & bounds ahead of the XJ in my opinion, the drives is miles better, the 231 bhp 3.0 diesel in the BMW is excellent, it's massive inside (Short Wheel Base), the LWB is even bigger, although some 7 series come stupidly equipped. Either way for me it'd be a 5 Series or a 7 Series, however the Volkswagen Phaeton is quite a forgotten car and it's extremely well built.

The new S80 is a brilliant car, the seats are unbelievably comfortable, the Stereo is class and the drive is excellent, even for a WWD, although there is the option of a V8 AWD model  :-*

This for example, although it has a couple of niggles, you can;t argue at that price and LPG'd too!

I think I'd be looking at (in a few years) the BMW E61 (touring) to replace the Omega, personally.. unless the load area is unreasonably small in real life, of course. Or go all pimpy and look at the Chrysler 300c estate.

Would never entertain a Volvo after the throttle body fiasco of the t5 lumps. Another watchdog affair. A £250 replacement part plus labour under "warranty"... USA get the part free under warranty. Uk don't.     ... OH REALLY!

And don't forget the swirl flap issue on tractor Beemers either.

That's not just an issue which affects beemers though, it affects quite a lot of modern diesels :-\ I don't see any of the 'newer' common rail diesels being 100% reliable to be honest.

Meant to add: my beast has just done 183k. (shocked thumbs up smiley).

Almost tempted by a Holden VZ Commodore Wagon. 2007, 50k and only $20,000 aus. (stroking chin smiley).

No real reason to replace it with a newer shytebox IMHO.

As an estate driver I would go for the MB 2.2 diesel E-series estate. As big as the Omega, faster on acceleration and high 40's MPG cruising. Even though it is only 2/3 of a proper engine! Don't know about reliability?

Trouble with new diseasels is that the fuel delivery parts are quite highly strung, and consequently quite highly priced. Mercedes would probably be a safe bet if the dealers weren't so pretentious...

Intend to keep the beastie on the road as long as physically possible. When the time does come I will have to think quite carefully. If the situation is forced, then probably end up being a late Vectra estate as a stop gap. :-/
