Asteroid Coming Near You!
« on: 07 February 2013, 19:36:37 »

No one seems to have posted what could be the answer to all the World's problems.  An asteroid is coming to call - well within 17,200 miles of us - on February 15th.

Watch this video and think, "what if the scientists have missed off a figure in their calculation".  No, don't worry scientist never get anything wrong!!  ::) ::) ::) :D :D :D

Bruce Willis is on call apparently to deal with it  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

What I found interesting is "more info" in a week. What info? :o

I wonder if it will cause some sector of the planet problems but no point in causing mass panic just yet!

Yes 17,000 odd miles is a pretty long way-unless you're talking about such things as this-in which case it becomes a very near miss!Just hope they're not a fraction out with their calculations I have other things planned than getting squished by an asteroid!!!

This one says 14 million km but could hit but the other is 17000 km but safe. I guess the timing makes the error on this one so much larger. Come back in 20 years and reassess!

Closer than a geostationary satellite! So .. that's pretty close, then.

Maybe it'll take out some of Sky's babies on the way through ;D

Scarry! :o :o :o :o

Still reading on it states "astronomers say there is still a one-in-200,000 chance that it could strike Earth in 2036."  That's ok then as I will be 82, and that will be enough for me!  You other younger buggers can just get on with it! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;)

That had occurred to me: how far out do our satellites orbit the Earth?  Could it take out the Sky satellites?  Thank God I use BT vision via an aerial! ::) ::) :D :D :D ;)

Geostationary orbit is ~22,000 miles above sea level at the equator - which is where Sky, communications and so on live. There's plenty of other stuff between the earth and that point, though (and higher) - lots of tasty targets to hit!
